Sam Tilly Earns Top Honors at Campbell Athletics Awards Ceremony

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – CU's male track and field athlete Sam Tilly was presented with one of the top honors Thursday evening at Campbell University's 2007-08 Athletics Awards Ceremony on campus at Turner Auditorium.

Tilly, a three-time Atlantic Sun Conference long jump champion, was presented Campbell's Outstanding Male Athlete award. A senior from Port Charlotte, Fla., Tilly was named Atlantic Sun Conference Outstanding Field Athlete at 2008 A-Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships. He won the 2008 A-Sun indoor long jump and triple jump with conference record-breaking distances and scored the most points of any male competitor at the indoor championships for the second-straight year.

An all-conference performer in three events, Tilly was a provisional NCAA championship qualifier in the indoor long jump. He has already qualified for the 2008 NCAA East Regional outdoor championship in the long jump as well. Tilly finished ninth in the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships long jump, one place shy of All-America status.

He won the long jump at 2007 NCAA East Region Championship, to become Campbell's first-ever regional track and field champion. A three-time NCAA East Regional (outdoor) qualifier and 2-time NCAA provisional indoor qualifier, Tilly has won 17 total Atlantic Sun medals heading into next month's A-Sun outdoor championships.

In addition to the Outstanding Male Athlete, Outstanding Female Athlete (Heidi Shallow) and Senior GPA Award (Maggie Rich), a number of other honors were presented during the ceremony.

The Charlie Reeves Award was presented to Katie Crawford as the top non-scholarship member of the track and field team.

The team's Most Valuable Player Awards were presented to Verrelle Wyatt (men's cross country), and Baillie Locke (women's cross country).

The team's Coaches Awards were presented to Jeff Klaves (men's cross country), Liza Davis (women's cross country), Robert Brunson (men's track and field) and Jocelya Webb (women's track and field)

The MVPs of the men's and women's outdoor track teams will be announced following the A-Sun Championship, May 16-17.
