BUIES
CREEK,
N.C.-Heading into the final weekend of competition before making
the trip to DeLand, Fla. for the Atlantic Sun Tournament, Campbell
will welcome league foe North Florida to the Eakes Complex for a 2
p.m. twinbill on Saturday.
The
Ospreys have already made the jump from their hometown of
Jacksonville, N.C. to Buies Creek once this season, as these games
began April 12, but just four batters into the opening contest,
severe weather postponed the decision. When the game resumes, UNF
will have the bases loaded with one out in the top of the
first.
Since
then, the Camels have played a pair of series at home and two on
the road, coming out an even 4-4. Last week, sophomore hurler
Brittany Stanley tossed just the third perfect game in Campbell
history, leading the Camels to a 2-0 win over Gardner-Webb on April
25. Stanley (20-8), a native of West Lafayette, Ind., pitched the
first perfect game of her career, with the last unblemished
performance by a CU pitcher coming on April 11, 2005, when Lauren
Caviness blanked Appalachian State.
The
second year Camel also became the third pitcher in Campbell history
to reach 20 wins, with Andrea Nardolillo (1993) and Christine
Hornak (1994, '95) accomplishing the feat previously. Stanley
helped the Camels to a sweep of East Carolina as well, their first
in over 10 years. The pitcher also helped her own cause at the
plate, hitting .500 (4-8) on the week, with two RBI and a pair of
doubles.
Senior
outfielder Courtney Quinn did her part as well, helping assure a
No. 5 seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Quinn, a Glencoe, Ala.
native, hit .500 on the week, while slugging two homers with 4 RBI.
The senior also broke the CU single season walks record, drawing
six free passes to reach 37 on the year.
The
Ospreys come to Buies Creek nearly two weeks removed from any
competition on the field, playing their last pair of contests on
April 20 against Stetson. The Hatters took game one of that series,
1-0, before UNF gained the 2-1 victory in the second
set.
A
pair of seniors lead North Florida at the dish, third baseman
Heather Hyde and second baseman Gwen Williams. Hyde checks in with
a .361 batting average, leading the team, as do her 50 runs scored
and 15 doubles. Hyde has also slugged 12 home runs with 38 RBI on
the season. Williams, the Atlantic Sun's Preseason Player of the
Year selection, has hit .330 through the squad's 61 contests,
dropping 13 homers with 49 RBI and 30 runs scored.
One
of the top hurlers in the league, sophomore Devyn Findley carries
the A-Sun's top ERA, a stiff 1.32, along with a 20-12 record and
221 strikeouts on the year to lead the Ospreys in the circle. While
holding opponents to a .184 average at the plate, Findley also
manages a .258 average herself, knocking in 24 runs on the
season.
Campbell
will play
Stetson in the opening round of the A-Sun Tournament, with that
match up coming on Thursday, May 8.
