BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Campbell, in search of its first-ever A-Sun
conference tournament championship, recently added a notch on its
belt as freshman second baseman Ellis Lowe was named to the
Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team, the league office announced
today.
Lowe, a native of
San Diego, Ca., started all but one game at second base this season
and was Campbell's only player to be recognized in the leagues
postseason awards. One of
Campbell's most consistent hitters this season, Lowe carried a
team-high 16 game hitting streak from March 20 to April 9 and was
second on the team in batting average (.336) and hits (71). Lowe, who recorded at least one
hit in 44 games this season, grabbed eight doubles and 22 RBI and
was also one of five Camel players to swipe ten or more bags. Current teammate Ryan Hamme, who
was named both to the second team all-conference and all-freshman
squads in 2006, is the last Camel to gain all-freshman honors.
No. 6 seeded Campbell (20-35, 13-20 A-Sun) will make its first
A-Sun Tournament appearance since 2006 and face off against the No.
1 seed Lipscomb Bisons at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21 at Melching
Field at Conrad Park.
Campbell, who entered the 2006 event in the No. 6 slot, eventually
lost to the top-seeded Jacksonville Dolphins and was downed by East
Tennessee State to ends its 2006 campaign. Campbell has never won an A-Sun
championship and is 4-14 in the tournament since joining the league
in 1994.
Winning games in the tournament is not a long shot as Campbell has
topped every team in the event at least once this season, including
taking two-of-three from Lipscomb (28-27, 19-14 A-Sun) last
weekend. Campbell, needing
to win a minimum of two games to get a berth in the tourney,
outscored the Bisons 22-19 and grabbed wins in the first two
contests. Campbell owns the
all-time series over Lipscomb 8-7.
Wednesday's pitching match up will look very similar to the first
game of last weekend's series as Lipscomb's Rex Brothers and
Campbell's Ryan Hamme will most likely be facing off. Brothers, the league's preseason
pitcher of the year, carried a no-hitter through the first three
innings but ran into a road block as Campbell posted seven runs in
the fourth inning en route to a 10-5 victory. Hamme, a junior from Wilmington, N.C.,
picked up the win in the contest after allowing two earned runs in
six innings of work.
Campbell also features one of the most prolific strikeout artists
in the A-Sun in Justin Lilly. Lilly, a senior from Raleigh, N.C.,
not only led the Camels in wins this season (5), but is tied for
tenth in the league in strikeouts (60) and fifth in strikeouts
looking (22). Lilly posted
two consecutive complete game ten strikeout performances in which
he was named A-Sun Pitcher of the Week.
The Camels, who are five stolen bases away from breaking the 2001
team's record of 104, have been tyrants on the base paths this
season as they rank second in the league in swipes (100) behind
Gardner-Webb. Brandon Scott
leads the attack as he not only owns the career record with 79, but
broke Campbell's single season record last weekend by taking his
32nd, 33rd and 34th bags of the
year. Scott finished the
regular season as the A-Sun's leader and currently ranks
14th in the country in the category.
Campbell claimed Big South Championships in 1988 and 1990 in which
the Camels went 7-0 in tournament games those years. The Camels' topped Baptist 17-0 in the
title game in '88 and dropped Coastal Carolina by a score of 5-2 in
'90. Campbell's only trip
to a regional was in '90, as teams were not granted automatic bids
in '88.
The state of Florida has been dominant in the A-Sun Tournament as
the title has been handed to a team in the state the last 14
years. In 2007 Jacksonville
was crowned champion, but the Dolphins will not have a chance to
defend the championship as they were swept by Kennesaw State to
drown out their hopes.
Stetson was triumphant in 2006.
Also featured in the 2008 version of the A-Sun Tournament is No. 2
seeded Mercer, No. 3 Belmont, No. 4 Gardner-Webb and No. 5
Stetson. Belmont will face
Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. on Wednesday and Stetson will clash with
Mercer in the night cap.
The winner of Campbell vs. Lipscomb will take on the loser of
Belmont vs. Gardner-Webb in the tournament's quarterfinal.
Live audio and statistics will be available via Campbell's official
athletic website www.GoCamels.com for all Camel games, while every
tournament game can be viewed on ASun.TV.
