RALEIGH, N.C.- No. 18 NC State scored seven runs on ten hits in the
first two innings, all of which were singles, to lift the Wolfpack
to an 8-2 non-conference victory over Campbell, Friday night at
Doak Field. Campbell
(17-29, 10-17) falls to 1-2 against ranked opponents this
season.
NC
State ace Clayton Shunick (6-4) gave the Wolfpack another solid
outing as he picked up his sixth victory of the season after
tossing seven innings of two-hit baseball. The junior from
Alpharetta, Ga. allowed just one run while striking out five
Campbell batters.
Justin Lilly (4-3) ran into trouble early and was strapped with the
loss after giving up seven earned runs in an inning of work. The senior from Raleigh, N.C.
struck out one batter without surrendering a walk.
Leading the way for the Camels offensively was Mike Causey, who
connected with his second homer of the season in the top of the
second inning. Causey was
the only Campbell hitter to have a multi-hit performance as he went
2-for-4 with scored a run.
Ellis Lowe and Carlton Floyd were the only other Camels to have
hits in the contest.
NC
State (31-13, 15-8 ACC) had four different players grab two or more
hits in the game, highlighted by its leadoff and two-hole hitters
Dallas Poulk and Pat Ferguson. Poulk finished 2-for-5 with two runs
scored, while Ferguson notched three hits and scored two more. In addition, Jeremy Synan smoked
his fifth homer of the season on a solo shot in the sixth
inning.
NC
State jumped out to an early lead in the first posting five runs
thanks to four consecutive hits. Back-to-back singles by Poulk and
Ferguson set the stage for NC State as five straight Wolfpack
hitters collected RBI. Tommy Foschi capped the scoring off
with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Campbell bounced back in the second as Causey capitalized on
Shunick's 0-1 offering and drove it over the left field wall for
his second career home run.
Causey, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., launched a long ball off
Shunick, who has allowed just four homers this season, to make the
score 5-1.
Poulk and Ferguson repeated their first inning performance as they
led the second off with two straight singles and both scored to
extend the NC State lead to 7-1. Poulk was knocked in by a Matt Payne
single up the middle and Ferguson crossed the plate on a Ryan Pond
sac fly to right field.
Poulk and Ferguson combined to score four runs in the contest.
After Synan moved the Wolfpack's advantage to 8-1 with a solo homer
in the sixth, Campbell made a final surge in the ninth, but fell
short scoring just one run to finalize the score at 8-2. Stephen Parsons drew a one-out
walk and advanced on a pair of wild pitches. John Watlington did the cleanup work
as he plated Parsons on a sac fly to left field.
NC
State improves its record in the all-time series to 27-7-1. The last time the Camels took a
game at Doak Field was in 2004.
Campbell will turn around and head to Elon, N.C. to face the
Phoenix tomorrow (May 3) at Latham Park. The first pitch is slated for 7
p.m.
