BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Sophomore catcher Amanda Littlejohn combined to
go 4-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI, leading Campbell to a
doubleheader split with North Florida in Atlantic Sun softball
action Saturday afternoon at the Eakes Complex.
The games
were the Camel's last of the 2008 regular season, coming out 37-23
overall and 9-13 in conference play, while UNF goes to 39-24 with a
13-9 league mark in its last contests of the season.
In the
suspended game one, which began on April 12 and was postponed due
to inclement weather, the Ospreys posted four runs in the first two
innings, a deficit the Camels could not overcome.
Starting
the day with the bases loaded and one out, one Osprey hit was aided
by three CU walks and two errors, giving UNF a 3-0 lead after one
inning of play. North Florida added another in the second, as
junior third baseman Heather Hyde knocked a one out double to
right-center to score fellow junior Ashley Parenteau.
From
there, second year Camel Brittany Stanley (20-9) was perfect in the
circle, denying a single North Florida base-runner, while fanning
three. The West Lafayette, Ind. native finished with the loss,
however, allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits while
walking and striking out four.
Campbell
could grab only one run in the contest, coming in the sixth inning
as Littlejohn singled in freshman Amanda Cline.
Sophomore
hurler Devyn Findley (21-12) picked up the win, allowing just one
run on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
In game
two action, Littlejohn registered another pair of RBI on her
11th homer of the year, a two-run shot, moving into sole
possession of the Campbell single season RBI record. The sophomore
catcher surpasses Shannon O'Bryan's mark of 61, set in 2001.
UNF
grabbed a run in the third, coming on a Gwen Williams base hit,
followed by four more in the fifth inning off three hits and one CU
error, taking the 5-2 lead.
The
Fighting Camels answered in the bottom half of the frame, though,
as Littlejohn, again, belted a two-run home run to collect RBI
number 63 and 64, pulling CU within one. The sixth saw another
Campbell score, as sophomore outfielder Robin Leathers singled in a
run to knot the game at five.
After
Stanley, who came on in relief of freshman Lauren Stephan in the
fifth, retired the Ospreys in the top of the seventh, the Camels
looked to end the contest with a score. Littlejohn and freshman
Amanda Miller drew a pair of walks to set the stage with just one
out, before junior first baseman Karlie Love sent a 2-1 pitch over
the head of Laura Williams in left to plate the game-winner.
Stanley
(21-9), tossing the final three innings, gave up just two hits
while fanning two and walking one to gain the win, while Findley
(21-13), also in relief, was charged with the loss. Findley, a
native of Gainesville, Fla. native, went one and 1/3 in the loss,
offering a pair of runs off two hits while walking three and
striking out one.
The Camels
will now make the trip to DeLand, Fla. for the Atlantic Sun
Tournament, facing Stetson in a 1 p.m. contest on Thursday, May
8.
