DELAND, FLA.-Freshman second baseman Keeli Michael drove a second
inning three-run home run over the fence in centerfield to fuel a
3-2 round one win for No. 5 Campbell over No.2 Stetson in Atlantic
Sun Softball Tournament action Thursday afternoon at Patricia
Wilson Field.
The Camels
move to 38-23 with the win, improving to 10-1 all-time in opening
round conference tournament contests. Stetson, the defending
tourney champion, took the loss, falling to 41-23 on the
season.
To start
things off, the Hatters put one run up in the first, as senior
third baseman Lindsay Wightman executed a suicide squeeze down the
first base line that scored leadoff batter Amy Joyce. Freshman
second baseman Keeli
Michael then put the Camels on top in the second, sneaking a
three-run homer over the centerfield fence, her second
round-tripper of the year.
In the
bottom of the fourth, the Hatters threatened the CU lead, with
Joyce drawing a bases loaded walk to score freshman Katelyn Perna,
pinch running on the play with just one out. From there, Campbell
pitcher Brittany Stanley fanned senior second baseman Nicole Forbes
looking before junior first baseman and first team all-conference
award winner Andrea Migliori flied out to Courtney Quinn, standing
on the warning track in left.
A
sophomore, Stanley (22-9), earned the victory, allowing two scores
on four hits with five strikeouts and seven walks. Junior hurler
Erica Demers (19-10) took the loss, meanwhile, giving up three runs
on seven hits while striking out nine and walking two.
The Camels
will take part in round two action, scheduled for an 8 p.m. start,
taking on East Tennessee State.
