Edenton Steamers left-hander
Daniel Gardo shares the Coastal Plain League lead in earned run
average heading into tonight's games. A 6-foot-3 resident of
West Chester, Pa., Gardo completed his freshman season last month
at Campbell University.
With the Steamers, Gardo has
made four appearances, including two starts. He owns a 1-0 won-lost record with a
0.00 ERA and has allowed just 10 hits and four walks, while
striking out 16 in 16 1/3 innings.
Gardo collected his first
victory of the summer 2008 campaign when he tossed 8 1/3 shutout
frames in a 3-0 win June 12 at Petersburg. He scattered five hits and struck out
six, while issuing just two walks.
He has helped lead the
Steamers to the best record (12-4) in the CPL. Edenton leads the CPL North Division
standings by three games in the loss column over the second-place
Petersburg Generals (7-7).
As a freshman at Campbell
this past spring, Gardo ranked second on the club in starts (7) and
victories (4-3), while compiling a 6.22 ERA over 55 innings in 17
outings. He walked 28
batters and struck out 31, while surrendering 80 hits.
He tossed a season-high eight
innings and allowed just one earned run and struck out five on Mar.
10 in an Atlantic Sun Conference victory over East Tennessee
State. He also had wins
over Dayton, North Florida and 22nd-ranked UNC
Wilmington.
As a high school senior in
2006, Gardo posted a 7-3 record with a 3.40 ERA with 61 strikeouts
in 56 innings for West Chester High School. He spent the 2006-07 year as a
red-shirt at the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to
Campbell.
Gardo is one of three Camels
playing in the Coastal Plain League this summer. Catcher Bryan Braswell is batting .235
with five RBI in six games with the Outer Banks Daredevils. Outfielder Matt Keen hit .160
with two RBI in seven games with the Fayetteville
Swampdogs.
The Coastal Plain League is
now in its 12th season. Featuring 14 teams playing in North
Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, the CPL is the largest
summer collegiate league in the country, and is certified by Major
League Baseball. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine
their skills with wooden bats during the summer months. For more
