BUIES
CREEK,
N.C.-Once again, Campbell cross country will begin its year with
the annual Campbell Invitational, with trips to North Carolina and
Walt Disney World also planned for the 2008 season.
The season's schedule,
released today by head cross country coach Ken Frenette, will open
in Buies Creek at the CU Invite, and will feature the traditional
4K women's race, followed by a 5K men's contest, both located at
the Campbell University Cross Country Course. Campbell swept the
race last season, with Verrelle Wyatt winning the men's individual,
while Baillie Locke crossed first for the women in her opening
collegiate event. Including Wyatt, Camels made up four of the first
five finishers, with Jeffrey Klaves (third), Terence Attema
(fourth) and Ken Eichberg (fifth). Diana Norden also took fifth,
while Hannah Roller placed seventh on the women's side.
From there, the Camels will
head to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the UNC Challenge on Sept. 13,
followed by the Asics / Winthrop Invitational one week later in
Rock Hill, S.C. Both races will measure 5K in distance for the men
and women.
On Oct. 4, CU will compete in
the Mason Invitational, hosted by Colonial Athletic Association
member George Mason in Fairfax, Va., where the Camels have been a
staple for the past two seasons. Campbell's women will run a 6K
course, while the men will take on an 8K version. Locke and Wyatt
posted top 10 finishes in last year's race, both taking ninth in
their respective races.
The next event for the
Fighting Camels will take them to Orlando, Fla. and Disney's Wide
World of Sports Complex for the Walt Disney World Cross Country
Classic on Oct. 11. The race, featuring a women's 5K and a women's
8K with a usually competitive field of 20 teams, will be in its
13th year of existence.
The Camels only Friday race
will be the Mountaineer Open, an event the squads competed in last
season. The trek to Appalachian State and Boone, N.C. on Oct. 17
will also be a 5K and 8K contest for the women and men,
respectively.
After nearly a two week
layoff, the Camels will then compete for an Atlantic Sun
Championship in Macon, Ga. The two competitions will be a 6K for
the women, while being a 10K for the male participants. Campbell's
men placed third in 2007, while the women notched a fifth place
finish.
From there, the Camels will
head to the NCAA Southeast Regionals, held in Winston-Salem, N.C.
on Nov. 15.
