BUIES CREEK, N.C. The Campbell University football team took
to the field for the second day of preseason camp on Wednesday
afternoon, Aug. 6 at the CU Football Stadium.
The
Camels, with the heat still a factor and temperatures still
hovering around triple digits, had a noticeably lighter day with
limited conditioning work.
Overall
the second day was similar to day one, as the Camels again worked
on field goals, broke down into positions and reviewed the
fundamentals through drills with limited contact. The coaching
staff continued to stress footwork and intensity. Head Coach
Dale Steele
was pleased with the great focus of the practice.
"We
were a lot better today," Coach Steele said. "We were not as
tentative and began to loosen up and just make some plays today. We
had greater focus and became a better football team today in all
areas."
"The
young secondary in particular did a good job," Coach Steele
continued. "The competition at quarterback is certainly something
that is improving daily. We still don't have an answer yet, but I
am seeing great improvement. Running back Carl Smith has come back
and done a nice job. Our first team offense has really done a solid
job of picking up where they were at during the end of the spring.
Our first defensive group is quickly coming back into form. The
issue remains that we are mixing and matching at so many positions
and are still trying to figure out how all the pieces of the puzzle
fit together."
Campbell
returns to the field for their third workout of camp, practicing
from 4:05- 6:20 p.m. Thursday, Aug 7. The highlight of the practice
will be the team putting on the shoulder pads for the first time
this season.
