COLO. – Mary Mattson of
Campbell University stands in a tie for fourth place after 18 holes
Monday of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic women's golf
tournament.
A junior from Ijamsville,
Md., Mattson played bogey-free golf on the par-72, 6206-yard
Ptarmigan Country Club layout. The second round continues Monday,
while Tuesday's final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. (MDT)
shotgun start.
Last year, Mattson opened the
fall season by leading after 36 holes and finishing third at the
Ptarmigan event with a one-over-par 217 (72-70-75). In Monday's first round, she birdied
the par-four 10th and par-five 16th holes and closed with
seven-straight pars to record her third par, or better, round in
four career outings at the venue.
Lee Lopez of Long Beach State
was the first-round leader with a four-under 68. Dominique Pytlewski of Colorado and
Pia Halbig of California were tied for second, one stroke back and
three-under 69.
California's Shannon Yocum, who shot
two-under par 214 to win the 2007 tournament, carded a first-round
71 on Monday and was tied for eighth
place.
Colorado led the 19-school field with
a first-round, five-under-par 283, one stroke better than Cal and
Louisville. Campbell was
tied for 13th place after 18 holes at 17-over
305.
Campbell freshman Michelle Koh birdied
two of her final four holes to finish her first collegiate round at
plus-five 77. Sophomore
Sarah Bejgrowicz and junior Belen Diaz Cisneros each shot 79. Sophomore Sandra Angulo finished
the opening round at plus-nine 81.
