Swimming Restarts Competition This Week

BUIES CREEK, N.C.— Coming off of a two-month layoff for final exams and the holidays, Campbell's swim team (4-4 overall, 3-2 CCSA) gets back into competition this week. The Camels start off the week and travel to Raleigh to compete against North Carolina State and East Carolina on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. at Casey Natatorium. CU will then return home to face off with North Carolina A&T in a makeup competition on Friday evening, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m. at the Johnson Natatorium in what will be the final home competition of the 2008-09 school year.

The Camels are coming off a seventh-place finish at the Davidson Invitational on Nov. 22. Heidi Shallow led the Camels at the meet with her time of 1:06.37 in the 100-yard breaststroke. The senior currently is also in the top-five in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) in 100 breaststroke (2nd), 200 breaststroke (1st), and the 200 IM (5th).

Shallow is one of five seniors on this year's team that has seen the swimming program at Campbell grow from its infant stage her freshman year to now. This year's senior class is the first class which has competed all four years with the Camels.

"This year senior class has put together a great season and have provided great leadership to the program and example for their teammates to learn from," head coach Pascal Molinard commented.

Another top performer for the Camels has been Ashlyn Stumpf, who is ranked seventh in the conference in the 50 freestyle (24.39).

N.C. State (4-4 overall, 2-3 ACC) is coming off a 127-114 victory over Georgia Tech on Jan. 17th. The Wolfpack are led by Lucy Lindsey in the 200 freestyle (1:53.70), Meg Thompson in the 50 freestyle (24.53), and Jen Kopenitz in the 400 IM (4:31.06).

East Carolina's season is off to a hot start with an 8-1 record in dual meets. The Pirates are coming off a 191-103 win against Maryland-Baltimore County. The Pirates are led by Amanda Duncan, who broke a 27-year-old pool record in the 100 butterfly (55.97) this season. Kelsy Brosi has also performed well for the team in the 100 backstroke (59.31) and the 200 backstroke (2:06.21), Jenna Stewart is the team's top performer in 50 freestyle (23.66) and the 100 freestyle (51.52), while Rachel Blue in the team's best in 200 freestyle (1:52.20) and 500 freestyle (5:00.81).

"They (N.C. State and East Carolina) are great competition to start this semester off with," Molinard commented. "Both teams are very fast and have great depth."

The Camels conclude the week and host North Carolina A&T on Friday evening at 5 p.m. This will be the first competition for the Aggies since late November as last week's meet against Radford was canceled.

After this week the Camels next head to Statesboro, Ga. to take on CCSA member Georgia Southern on Saturday, Jan. 31 at noon.
