SPARTANBURG, S.C.-USC Upstate
erased a 57-53 deficit at the 3:59 mark, ending the game on a 16-4
run to down Campbell 69-61 in Atlantic Sun women's basketball
action Saturday afternoon inside the Hodge Center.
Campbell
falls to 9-10
overall with a 2-8 league record while the Spartans move to 9-8 and
4-5 in A-Sun play.
With 3:59 to play, the Lady
Camels owned a four point lead, but by the 2:31 mark, Campbell
clinged on to a 57-56 advantage. After a Campbell foul, junior
guard Courtney Hawkins drained a pair of free throws to give USC
Upstate their first lead in over 10 minutes.
Each team was limited to just
one field goal a piece over the final minutes, but the Spartans
owned an 11-for-12 clip from the line, compared to just a 2-for-2
showing by the Lady Camels to give the Spartans the 69-61
victory.
Junior forward Geami Britt
led the Lady Camels with a season-high 21 points on 9-of-11
shooting, adding five rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore
forward Lauren Yesh registered 14 points and seven boards, while
senior guard Jessica Mack chipped in nine points.
Junior center Ashley
Williamson led the Lady Camels on the glass with 10 rebounds,
contributing seven points, largely due to a 5-of-6 ratio from the
free throw line.
For USC Upstate, sophomore
forward Chelsea McMillan paced three Spartans in double figures
with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Courtney Hawkins
recorded 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard
Kendra Wallace added 14 points in the win, draining 4-of-7 from
distance.
Britt nailed seven of her
nine first-half shots, tallying 15 points, three shy of her
season-high. After nearly a three minute period without a basket,
Britt came off the bench to drill the Lady Camels' first six
points, and 15 of the squad's first 23. Yesh added four points and
three rebounds in the opening stanza.
McMillan led the way for USC
Upstate, posting 11 points that included a 5-for-5 performance from
the charity stripe. Wallace recorded six points in the first-half,
all from behind the three-point arc, pushing the Spartans to a
29-28 first-half advantage.
Campbell will remain on the road for
its next pair of contests, heading to Georgia next weekend for
tilts with Kennesaw State and Mercer.
