BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell will look to close out the nonconference
portion of its 2009 schedule on a high note Tuesday, as the Camels
travel to Winston-Salem State for a 7 p.m. matchup inside the C.E.
Gaines Center.
The Camels will head into Tuesday's contest at 12-8 on the season,
a mark that includes a 7-2 record on the road and a 6-4 overall
nonconference tab. The Rams, meanwhile, have posted a 4-21 overall
record, but are winners of three of their last five contests after
beginning the season 1-19. WSSU took a 3-1 victory at home against
North Carolina A&T in its last outing.
Campbell has been led by the duo of Emily Werner and Ashley
Weers, who combine for nearly 6.5 points and over five kills
per set played. Werner, a junior outside hitter, leads the team
with 2.79 kills per set, tacking on 2.28 digs a frame. Weers,
meanwhile, averages 2.60 kills and 0.90 blocks per set, leading the
team in points with 236.5 on the year. The two have combined for 31
double-digit point outings and have collected at least 10 kills
each 21 times.
Sophomore setter Hope Leatigaga also averages
7.79 assists per frame, while senior defensive specialist Sarah Hill
is posting 3.62 digs per set. Junior middle Caitlin Bendy, meanwhile
leads the team in blocking with 1.08 per set. The Stony Brook, N.Y.
native also owns a .317 hitting percentage, second only to Weers'
Atlantic Sun leading .369 clip.
Pacing the Rams has been senior outside hitter Annika Barnwell, who
notches 3.27 kills per set, adding 1.80 digs a frame. Behind
Barnwell is sophomore Ashley Harris, who is posting 2.33 kills and
1.82 digs per set. Defensively, junior libero LaKeisha Hawes leads
the team at 3.28 digs per set, while sophomore setter Alexandria
Brown adds 6.79 assists a frame.
Campbell and Winston-Salem State have faced five common opponents
on the year (East Carolina, Davidson, Virginia Commonwealth, North
Carolina Central and High Point), with the Rams holding a 0-5 mark
and the Camels posting a 3-3 record against that same group (CU has
played NC Central twice). The Rams are 1-15 in those sets, while
the Camels hold a 12-11 edge.
In the all-time series, which only dates back to 2006, the Camels
are 3-0 against WSSU, including a 1-0 record in Winston-Salem. That
win came in the Camels' last contest of 2007.
The Camels will get back to A-Sun play this weekend, beginning the
second half of its league schedule with East Tennessee State and
USC Upstate next weekend.
