BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Emily Werner piled up 21
kills, 13 digs, four blocks and four aces to fuel Campbell to a 3-2
(19-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19 15-7) win over East Tennessee State in
Atlantic Sun volleyball action Friday night inside the John W.
Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
The Camels improve to 14-8 overall and 7-4 in A-Sun play with the
win, while ETSU falls to 6-14 and 5-7 in league contests. With 14
wins, Campbell has its most victories in a single season since 2001
when the Camels went 17-10. The team's seven conference wins stands
second all-time, behind only 1998, when the team posted eight.
Werner's 27.0 points was just half a tally off her career-high of
27.5, set in the final week of her freshman season at North
Carolina A&T. The Sarasota, Fla. native's season-high 21 kills,
meanwhile, is two shy of a career mark, also set at NC A&T.
Werner's four aces tied a career mark as well, one the junior
outside hitter has reached five times in her career.
Junior outside hitter Allyson Goldbach followed
with 14 kills and seven digs with three blocks and an ace, totaling
16.5 points on the night. Caroline Hammersley and Ashley
Weers combined for 13 kills in the win. Weers, a senior middle
blocker, also notched a season-high eight blocks, including seven
assisted and one solo. Hammersley, a junior right side hitter from
Raleigh, N.C., tacked on 10 digs and a pair of blocks in the
win.
Sophomore setter Hope Leatigaga pushed 42
assists with sic digs, four kills and an ace for the Camels. Senior
libero Sarah Hill anchored the CU
defense with 14 digs.
The Buccaneers boasted three in double-figure kills in the loss, as
junior right side Whitney Cogburn notched 11, as did junior middle
Erin Ryan. Junior outside hitter McKayla Barber added 10 scores for
ETSU. Cogburn added 11 digs on the night, while freshman libero
Ashley Rosenboom recorded 14 digs.
Senior setter Amanda Youell posted 44 assists and seven digs and a
pair of blocks, while junior middle Alysa Long collected nine
kills.
The Camels will be back in action tomorrow at home, taking on USC
Upstate at 3 p.m. inside the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation
Center.
