BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Richie Edmondson scored one goal and set up the
winner and Mercer upset top-seeded Campbell 3-1 in Friday's first
semifinal game of the Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer
championship tournament at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Mercer keeper Brett Petricek made four diving saves, all in the
first half, to keep the Bears level. Campbell hit the woodwork
twice, once in each half, before Mercer took the lead for good on
Ian Cameron's 72nd minute goal.
The Bears (7-10-2) advance to Sunday's 1:00 p.m. championship
against either second-seeded Stetson or third seed East Tennessee
State. Campbell, which won the A-Sun regular season title for the
third time in five years, concluded its year at 8-10-1.
The Camels went in front on Keegan Terry's header off Mitchell
Cardenas' corner kick. Cardenas touched the corner to Vince
Petrasso, who stopped the ball for a far post service. Terry
nodded the ball home for his fifth goal of the year.
However, Mercer equalized just 1:21 later. Camel keeper Ted Awana
saved Ryan Young's header off a corner, but the rebound fell loose
in the area. Will Betts touched the ball to Richie Edmondson, who
netted his second goal of the season.
Petricek dove to save Ben Iiames' ninth-minute header, then left
his feet again in the 19th minute to stop Cardenas' free kick.
In the 23rd minute, Petrasso's left-footed shot beat Petricek, but
caromed off the left post. Twice in the final nine minutes of the
half, the Mercer keeper again kept the score tied - on a
point-blank stop against Terry in the 38th minute and in the 41st
when he came off his line to stop Petrasso at the top of the
area.
Arkenson Neckles nearly put the Bears in front in the 48th minute
when he broke free down the right flank, but Awana dove to make the
save.
In the 61st minute, Petrasso was fouled on the break just outside
the Mercer box. Cardenas' resulting free kick deflected off the
wall and the cross bar.
The winning goal came in the 72nd minute. Neckles headed down
Edmondson's serve in the box to Cameron, whose 10-yard shot was
nearly saved by Awana, but rolled in. Less than eight minutes
later, a poor clearance fell to Neckles just outside the box. His
right footed shot deflected off a Camel defender and dipped into
the upper right corner of the net.
Campbell finished with a 14-9 edge in shots, but only five of those
were on target.
"I have to commend our opponent for the fight and drive Mercer
had," said Campbell head coach Doug Hess. "As hard as it is to
believe that the season is over, I'm not going to define the
careers of our seniors; or the work of our team this season, by 90
minutes, but rather the long haul, their body of work. Tournament
soccer is never fun. It's cruel."
Six Fighting Camel seniors, who helped the Camels win four Atlantic
Sun Conference trophies and earn the program's first NCAA College
Cup berth, made their final playing appearances. Ted
Awana (2008-09), Pat Danford (2006-09),
Jason Keever (2007-09), Justin
Madrid (2005-09), Vince Petrasso
(2006-09) and Austin Skakle (2006-09) helped
Campbell build a 25-4-5 A-Sun regular season record over the past
four years, and a 32-5-5 mark dating back to fifth-year senior
Madrid's freshman campaign. Along the way, the Camels won the
league regular season title in 2005, '08 and '09 as well as the
conference tournament crown in '07, while garnering the program's
first-ever year-end national ranking in '08.
