BUIES
CREEK, N.C. -Campbell's
football team (2-6, 1-4 PFL), fresh off the first league win in
school history, had a pair of players honored by the Pioneer
Football League this week. Redshirt sophomore kicker Adam
Willets was named the PFL's Special Teams Player of the Week
for the second time in as many weeks, while sophomore defensive
back Cody Lyon took home
Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his
career.
Willets earned his second consecutive PFL award after scoring 11
points in Campbell's 31-22 victory over Morehead State on Oct. 31.
Willets started his afternoon by nailing a 39-yard field goal on
Campbell's opening drive. Willets then nailed a 44-yard field goal
late in the second quarter to put CU only a point behind the Eagles
going into halftime. The 44-yard field goal was a career long for
the kicker. The redshirt sophomore continued his impressive
afternoon by knocking in a 29-yard field goal in the third quarter
to give CU its first ever second half lead at 16-14. Willets also
hit both of his extra point attempts and averaged 57.6 yards a
kickoff for Campbell. On the year, Willets is second in the Pioneer
Football League with eight made field goals and third among kickers
with 38 points. Of the eight field goals that Willets has hit this
season seven have come from farther than 36 yards. The 11 points
are the second most of his career.
Lyon was instrumental in Campbell securing the victory over
Morehead State. The sophomore cornerback came up big at the end of
the first half for CU when he was able to secure an interception
deep in Campbell territory (at CU's 16 yard line) to thwart a
Morehead State drive and keep the Camels only down a point going
into the break. Lyon made perhaps the biggest play of the day in
the final two minutes of the game for Campbell, when he was able to
step in front of a Morehead State pass with CU clinging to a
three-point advantage and return it 45-yards for a score to prevent
a potential comeback in the 31-22 victory for Campbell. Lyon's two
interceptions are a career-high. He also was second on the team
with nine tackles, also a career-best effort for the sophomore.
Lyon also returned a kickoff 18-yards for Campbell and ended his
afternoon with 69 yards.
The awards are the third and fourth times that Campbell's football
program has been honored with a weekly award since the program was
restarted. CU's Milton Brown was named the
PFL's Defensive Player on the Week on Sept. 29, 2008 and Willets
earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors last week.
Next, Campbell travels to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake (7-1,
5-0 Pioneer Football League) on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. EST.
