BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Six Fighting Camel seniors, who have helped the
Camels win four Atlantic Sun Conference trophies and earn the
program's first NCAA College Cup berth, will make their final
regular season playing appearances at the Eakes Athletic Complex
tonight when Campbell hosts Davidson at 7:00 p.m. Ted Awana
(2008-09), Pat Danford (2006-09), Jason Keever (2007-09), Justin
Madrid (2005-09), Vince Petrasso (2006-09) and Austin Skakle
(2006-09) will pull on the Orange & Black jersey for the final
time in a regular season match at home this evening.
The group has helped Campbell build a 25-4-5 A-Sun regular season
record over the past four years, and a 32-5-5 mark dating back to
fifth-year senior Madrid's freshman campaign. Along the way, the
Camels have won the league regular season title in 2005, '08 and
'09 as well as the conference tournament crown in '07, while
garnering the program's first-ever year-end national ranking in
'08. During that span, Campbell defeated North Carolina three
times in the last four years and became the most successful of all
A-Sun schools in the last five seasons.
CAMELS DEFEAT JACKSONVILLE TO WIN A-SUN REGULAR SEASON
CROWN: Vince Petrasso scored the first
goal, then had an assist on the second as Campbell defeated
Jacksonville 2-1 on Saturday to win its second-straight A-Sun
regular season championship. Keegan Terry added
the game-winning strike for the Camels, who avenged last year's
A-Sun final loss and eliminated the Dolphins from this year's
league tournament race in the process.
CU SET TO HOST A-SUN FINAL FOUR: Campbell will
host the Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer championship for the
second-straight year at the Eakes Athletic Complex. On Thurs.,
Nov. 12, semifinal play begins at 4:00 p.m. with second-seeded
Stetson facing the winner of Saturday's Lipscomb at East Tennessee
State first-round match. The winner of Saturday's Mercer at North
Florida contest will square off against top-seeded Campbell on
Thurs., Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m. The final is slated for a 1:00 p.m.
kick-off on Sat., Nov. 14.
SENIOR TED AWANA (Elizabeth City, N.C.) won the
starting goalkeeper job this year and has made 12 starts in the
nets for the Camels. He earned his first career shutout at Georgia
Southern, and recorded back-to-back blankings of Mercer and
Stetson. Awana was named A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week on
Oct. 19 thanks in part to a career-high 11 save performance at
second-ranked North Carolina. He joined the program in 2008 as a
transfer from Louisburg Junior College.
SENIOR PAT DANFORD (Cary, N.C.) has played a
pivotal role in the Camel defense over the last four years. The
Camels own a 30-16-3 record in games when he starts. This season,
the three-time A-Sun All-Academic team member has hit career-highs
in goals (3) and points (7) - tallying the first goal in Camel wins
over Georgia Southern, ETSU and North Florida.
SENIOR JASON KEEVER (Trinity, N.C.) has scored 11
goals in 57 games over three seasons since joining the Camels as a
transfer from Coastal Carolina. A 2008 A-Sun all-conference second
team member and 2009 pre-season all-league choice, Keever has also
earned A-Sun all-academic honors in each of his first two years at
Campbell. As a junior, he ranked 10th in the A-Sun with 6 goals
and scored 2 game-winners.
SENIOR JUSTIN MADRID (Yorktown, Va.) has helped
the Camels to the A-Sun finals in each of his first three seasons
(2005, '07, '08) as well as three league regular season titles
('05, '08, '09). A two-year captain, he was presented the squad's
Glen Brewster Memorial Award for Leadership and Courage in both
2008 and 2009. The two-time member of the A-Sun All-Academic Team
will tie the school career record for matches played (82)
tonight.
SENIOR VINCE PETRASSO (Woodbridge, Ontario)
already ranks 24th on Campbell's career scoring leaders with 53
points (17 goals, 19 assists) in 65 matches. He was the 2007 A-Sun
Tournament MVP, a first-team all-conference pick in '08 and
unanimous choice for the '09 pre-season all-league squad. As a
senior, he leads the A-Sun and ranks fourth nationally in assists
per game with 10 in 16 outings. He was named A-Sun player of the
week on Monday after helping the Camels win their 2nd-straight
league regular season title.
SENIOR AUSTIN SKAKLE (Cary, N.C.) is a four-year
starter in the Camel defense who has earned A-Sun All-Academic Team
honors in each of his first three seasons. He was one of 30
finalists in the nation for the 2009 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Last year, he was named to the Academic All-District 3 team by the
College Sports Information Directors of America. He has helped CU
hold opponents to one or no goals 48 times in the last four
years.
HOME, SWEET HOME: Since opening the year with
three-straight home losses, the Camels have won their last four
games at the Eakes Complex. Campbell owns a 31-11-0 record at home
since the start of the 2005 season. Included among those 31
victories are three against nationally-ranked foes.
DAVIDSON GLANCE: Davidson (10-7) started the year
with nine victories in its first 10 outings, but has dropped six of
its last seven, including Saturday's 3-1 Southern Conference
setback at UNC Greensboro. The Wildcats are unbeaten (10-0) when
scoring multiple goals, but are winless (0-7) when they score one
or less. Charlie Reiter leads the team with 25 points on 9 goals
and 7 assists, while Yannick Pilgrim and Alex Caskey have scored 7
goals apiece.
THE DAVIDSON SERIES: Campbell won the two most
recent contests with Davidson. The Camels knocked off the
23rd-ranked Wildcats 2-1 in Buies Creek on Sept. 13, 2005, and then
claimed a 1-0 victory at Davidson a year later. CU leads the
all-time series, which dates to Campbell's inaugural season of
1963, by a 5-4-0 margin.
