FARMVILLE, VA.-Longwood used a 20-6 second half run to down
Campbell 72-55 in women's basketball action Tuesday night inside
Willett Hall.
Campbell falls to 4-3 with the loss, while Longwood improves to
3-8, snapping a four game skid.
Senior forward Ashley Williamson led the way
for Campbell with a season high 17 points and 13 rebounds,
including a staggering nine on the offensive end. The double-double
was the second by a Lady Camel this season, and the fifth of
Williamson's career. Junior forward Lauren Yesh joined
Williamson in double figures with 10 points, adding five
rebounds.
Freshman guard Monique
Spry, meanwhile, added nine points and four boards off the
bench. Junior guard Courtney
Cannon tallied five points for the Lady Camels, also adding
four rebounds in the loss.
For the Lancers, junior guard Krystal Garrison led the way with a
game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman center Heather Tobeck
added 14 points with seven rebounds and a pair of blocks in the
win, while sophomore forward Brittanni Billups posted 10 points and
seven rebounds.
Ashley Williamson pushed
Campbell out to an early lead in the opening minutes, banging in
the Lady Camel's first six points on three buckets in the paint,
giving CU a 6-4 advantage. Never trailing by more than four,
Longwood surged to take its first lead with 6:41 remaining, as
Becky Fernandez drained both of her free throw attempts to put the
Lancers on top, 21-19.
By the 3:00 mark, the Lady Camels were down just three before Jazmine
Cooper stole away a Longwood pass after a rebound under the CU
basket, following with a layup, pulling Campbell within one, at
25-24.
With time winding down in the first stanza, the Lancers took six of
the half's final eight points, taking a 33-28 lead into the
break.
With the clock reading 13:59 in the second frame, Campbell trailed
by just one, 42-41, after Ashley Williamson connected
on the front end of a trip to the line. Over the next eight
minutes, the Lancers owned a decisive 20-6 run, pushing the Lady
Camels down 62-47 with 5:58 remaining. Despite a pair of Lady Camel
baskets, a five point run by LU's Krystal Garrison, dashed
Campbell's hopes. The Lancers ended the night with a 72-55 win.
The Lady Camels will be back in action on Dec. 19 in Buies Creek,
playing the first of three straight home contests against
Jacksonville.
