CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Junior
Desiree John broke the Campbell women's 60 meter hurdles record for
the second time this season, highlighting the Camels' efforts over
the weekend at the Carolina Classic.
Freshman Courtney Raynor also
set a new
Campbell record in the indoor pole vault, registering a mark of
3.10 meters to break Ginger Dulaney's record of 2.90 meters, set in
2003. Raynor placed third on the day, while North Carolina's Abby
Kimball won the event with a mark of 3.40 meters.
In all, 20 personal bests
were set for the Camels, not including one tied mark, with 12
coming on the women's side and eight from the CU men.
John's school record in the
60 meter hurdles, a 9.14 in the event's preliminaries, seeded her
third in the finals, but the junior ended the event in fourth with
a time of 9.36.
Camels took the second, third
and fourth positions in the women's 400 meter dash, with John
taking the number two spot in the race with a time of 58.43. Senior
Karlyn Duncan and freshman Courtney Kinlaw took the three and four
positions with times of 59.04 and 59.13, respectively.
Senior Jocelya Webb tied for
the title in the women's high jump, posting a leap of 1.63 meters
along with North Carolina's Alexandra Coppadge and Richmond's Megan
Ney.
The Campbell 4x400 meter
squad finished as the runner-up in its event, posting a 3:55.56
with John, Duncan, Kinlaw and junior Jen Anderson. Sophomore
Baillie Locke also finished sixth in the women's 3000 meters,
posting a personal mark of 10:38.29.
On the men's side, sophomore
Adoniss Jones won the men's 60 meter hurdles preliminaries with a
time of 8.17, but Harold Sims claimed the title with a time of 8.25
in the finals. Jones took fourth overall with a time of
8.28.
Meanwhile, senior Greg
Dunston, who won two events at last week's Liberty Open, finished
fifth in the men's 60 meter dash preliminaries with a 7.00, but
finished sixth in the finals with a 7.02. Freshman Cameron White
also finished eighth with a 7.09.
Junior Harold Sims finished
seventh in the men's 400 meters, posting a 49.86. Senior Verrelle
Wyatt took fourth in the men's 3000 meters, notching a time of
8:37.71.
The Camel men's 4x400 meter
relay squad, featuring Sims, Jones, Kelvonto Cooper and Cardel
Johnson, also took third, clocking in at 3:29.51 behind Johnson C.
Smith (3:21.01) and UNC (3:23.86).
The Camels will return to
Chapel Hill for their next event, making the short trip for the
Carolina Invitational on Feb. 13.
