BUIES CREEK, N.C. Campbell's softball team, after starting
the season in Chattanooga, returns home to the Eakes Athletic
Complex to host the Camel Stampede from Feb. 13-14. Five games will
be played a day with Campbell playing their first game starting at
5:30 p.m. against Bucknell on Friday afternoon. The tournament will
kick off with a matchup of Charleston Southern and Ohio on Feb. 13
at 10:00 a.m.
Campbell
is off to a 1-3 start to the season. CU won their first game in
thrilling 8-4 fashion over Tennessee Tech on Feb. 6 but dropped
their last three games against the field. Senior Karlie Love is off to a
strong start for the Camels and is leading the conference with
three home runs and eight RBIs. Love was named the Atlantic Sun's
Player of the Week for the first time in her career this week.
Sophomore
Katie Hinton
also excelled in Chattanooga and reached base a total of seven
times on her three hits and four walks. Hinton is currently tied
for the conference lead with five runs scored on the year.
The
Camels have continued the power surge from last season that led to
a school-record 64 home runs and have homered in each of their
first four games to totaled six home runs on the season.
Each
team in the five-team tournament will have the opportunity to
matchup with each other head-to-head over the two days.
Bucknell,
who are opening the 2009 campaign in Buies Creek, are led by
sophomore outfielder Lauren Fry. Fry won the
Patriot League's top freshman last season after hitting .336 with
11 doubles and a school-record 31 RBIs. Ohio (2-3) started their season last
week in the New Mexico State Tournament. The Bobcats lost their
first two games, but rallied and won two of their final three. Ohio
sophomore Emily
Wethington leads the team with a .600 batting average and
seven runs-batted in. Charleston Southern is off to a 3-0 start
after taking all three games from North Carolina Central over the
weekend. Freshman Megan Lombard is off to a
strong start with a .667 batting average to go along with six hits
and two stolen bases. These will be the first games of the season
for St. Joseph's. The Red Hawks return the dynamic duo of junior
Brooke
Darreff and senior Erika Rosenwinkel this
season. Darreff hit .461 with 53 hits and 33 RBIs last season,
while Rosenwinkel totaled a .354 batting average and 19 doubles as
a junior.
The
Camel Stampede is the first in-season tournament that the Campbell
has host since the Campbell Classic in March of 1992.

CU welcomes in North Carolina Central for a 4 p.m. doubleheader on
Feb. 17 at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
