BUIES CREEK, N.C..- Campbell's softball team (2-3) jumped out to a
4-1 lead and held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory over Bucknell
(0-2) in the fourth game of the Campbell Stampede on Friday, Feb.
13 at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Christina
Melton pitched well for CU in picking up the first win of her
career. She went the first six innings with four strikeouts. Jane
Messersmith allowed all four runs in her six innings for Bucknell
in defeat.
CU
scored first and tallied two in the second inning. Melton drove in
pinch runner Hilary Wheatley with the first run on her ground out.
Amanda Miller continued her strong hitting with two outs and drove
in Keeli Michael with the second run to give the Camels a 2-0
advantage.
The
Bison cut the deficit in half in the fourth as pinch runner Lauren
Trosch scored from third on a pass ball to make the score 2-1
heading to the bottom of the frame.
CU
put a two-spot of their own up in the bottom of the frame. Melton
and Taylor McGee both singled to start the frame. A Robin Leathers'
single to left field brought Melton in all the way from second.
McGee would scamper home with CU's fourth run on Katie Hinton's RBI
ground out.
Bucknell
jumped back into the game in the sixth inning with two runs. Alyson
Ford singled through the right side to start the frame. Alyssa
Okita followed with her own base hit to left field. Elyse Colmenero
reached on an infield single to load the bases. After a strike out,
Ford came in to score on a pass ball and Kristin Frick drove in
Okita with a ground out.
With
the game on the line and CU clinging to a one-run lead in the
seventh, closer Katie Woodcock was brought in to save the game and
she retired the side in order. For Woodcock it was her second save
of the season.
Campbell
continues tournament play with three more games tomorrow starting
with Ohio at 10 a.m.
