BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Junior center
Ashley Williamson posted a team-high 14 points, leading Campbell
over USC Upstate, 62-58, in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action
Saturday afternoon inside the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
The Lady Camels improve to
11-16 on the season with a 4-14 league record, while USC Upstate
falls to 11-15 with a 6-11 A-Sun mark.
Williamson also knocked down
6-of-8 from the charity stripe, while pulling down five rebounds in
the win. Joining Williamson in double figures was freshman guard
Amanda O'Neill and junior forward Geami Britt, who added 11 and 10
points respectively. O'Neill posted six rebounds and three assists
on the afternoon, with Britt chipping in two rebounds and a pair of
assists.
Junior guard Lindsay
Smithberger came off the bench with an eight-point flurry in nine
minutes on the floor, including a 2-of-3 clip from three. Sophomore
forward Lauren Yesh and junior forward Gara Bell added five points
in the win.
Junior guard Courtney Hawkins
led the way for the Spartans, notching a game-high 17 points on
5-of-9 shooting, with a 7-of-8 performance from the free throw
line, adding three assists and three steals. Hawkins also committed
eight of the Spartans 25 turnovers.
Junior guard Kolesia
Richardson registered 15 points in the loss, while freshman guard
Lesley Daniel added nine tallies. Chelsea McMillan and Chelsey
Peterson posted five points apiece for the Spartans.
After the Spartans opened the
contest on a 7-2 advantage, the Lady Camels reeled off a 19-4 run
to take a 21-11 lead, capped off by a Williamson jumper in the
lane. A Cherale Powell basket then sparked a 10-1 USC Upstate
spurt, cutting the game to one. Four points from Williamson and a
pair from O'Neill helped Campbell to a 28-25 halftime
lead.
Trading baskets for the
majority of the second half, Campbell grabbed its largest lead of
the stanza at the 9:38 mark, as a Gara Bell lay-in plus one gave
the Lady Camels a five point advantage.
After a 10-5 Spartan run,
however, USC Upstate pulled the game even, again, as Courtney
Hawkins completed the conventional three-point play.
The Spartans would force the
sixth tie of the contest at the 2:51 mark on a Peterson lay-in, a
55-all knot, but seven-straight Lady Camel points sealed the 62-58
home win.
Campbell will close out the 2008-09
regular season next weekend, hosting Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday
before entertaining Stetson in the year's finale.
