BUIES
CREEK,
N.C.-Coming off a thrilling win over USC Upstate in front of a home
crowd last weekend, Campbell women's basketball will take on the
Atlantic Sun's leader on Thursday, as sharp-shooting Florida Gulf
Coast heads into the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation
Center.
The Lady Camels (11-16, 4-14
A-Sun) were paced by Ashley Williamson, as the junior center posted
a team-high 14 points, leading Campbell past USC Upstate, 62-58.
Williamson also knocked down 6-of-8 from the charity stripe, while
pulling down five rebounds in the win.
Joining Williamson in double
figures was freshman guard Amanda O'Neill and junior forward Geami
Britt, who added 11 and 10 points respectively. O'Neill posted six
rebounds and three assists on the afternoon, with Britt chipping in
two rebounds and a pair of assists.
Junior guard Lindsay
Smithberger came off the bench with an eight-point flurry in nine
minutes on the floor, including a 2-of-3 clip from three. Sophomore
forward Lauren Yesh and junior forward Gara Bell added five points
in the win.
Yesh and Britt have led the
Lady Camels on the offensive end, combining for 18.2 points per
game on the season. The two have also combined for 24 double figure
scoring games, with one or the other leading CU on 13
occasions.
FGCU (23-4, 16-3 A-Sun),
meanwhile, are coming off an even closer game at Jacksonville, as
the Eagles' Kelsey Jacobson lifted her squad over the Dolphins with
a three-point bucket just before the final horn. The Eagles' 68-67
victory was their 14th in a row.
Since exerting their
dominance in a 102-53 shredding of USC Upstate on Feb 5, however,
FGCU has played opponents at a much closer distance, taking its
last five wins by single digits. Florida Gulf Coast owns 13 double
figure wins on the season.
In the teams' previous
meeting, Campbell's A-Sun opener back in December, FGCU opened the
second half with a 23-10 run on the way to a 73-46 win inside Alico
Arena. Britt led the Lady Camels, grabbing 10 of her team-high 12
points in the first half. Williamson, meanwhile, registered nine
points and five boards while Yesh added eight points and five
rebounds.
The Eagles, who launched 29
three pointers in the afternoon tilt, knocked down 11 from behind
the arc, with seven coming from freshman guard Kelsey Jacobson and
junior forward Chelsea Lyles. The pair went for 12 and 13 points,
respectively. Junior guard Brittany Brown notched a game-high 17
points to go along with five rebounds. Junior forward Adrienne
McNally joined the trio in double figures, recording 12 points and
eight boards.
The Lady Camels will hit the
floor once more during the regular season after their match up with
FGCU, hosting Stetson on Saturday. Five Lady Camels will be honored
on the traditional senior day.
