CHARLESTON, S.C. The Campbell softball team (12-5) fell in
the first game of day, 7-1, to Charleston Southern (7-8) on
Saturday morning at the Charleston Southern Tourney. The Camels
then rallied to win the second game, 11-0, over Norfolk State (4-5)
in the afternoon session at Buccaneer Field to earn a split and a
tournament record of 3-1.
Freshman
Christina
Melton (5-2) went the distance in the second game with
three hits allowed and six strikeouts for Campbell.
In
the second game Campbell wasted no time in denting the scoreboard
with Katie
Hinton reaching on fielder's choice and coming in to score
on Karlie
Love's RBI single. For Love it was her 27th RBI of the
season.
The
Camels added two more runs in the second inning. Freshman Taylor McGee walked
to start the frame and came in to score on sophomore Lizzie Goldbach's triple.
Goldbach scored the third run on senior Hilary Wheatley's sacrifice
fly.
Campbell
added five more to the lead in the third. Hinton doubled to
centerfield to start the frame. After the next two were retired in
order, Melton then reached on fielding error by the left fielder
that scored Hinton. McGee followed with an RBI single to score
Melton. After a Goldbach single, junior Robin Leathers launched her
third home run of the season to drive in McGee and Goldbach and
give the CU an 8-0 advantage.
The
Camels offense would finish the scoring with three in the fifth
inning. Melton doubled to left center, Goldbach pushed a single
past the shortstop to score Melton. Goldbach promptly stole second,
Leathers walked and both came into score on Wheatley's double.
On
the day the Camels had a pair of players drive in three runs in
Wheatley and Leathers. Leathers also scored a pair for Campbell.
Goldbach had a strong performance with three hits and runs
scored.

Charleston
Southern plated a pair in the first inning on Megan Hall's
sacrifice fly and Jamie Wellons RBI double.
The
CSU offense added a run in the second. Brittani Giannini doubled
with two outs and came around to score on Megan Lombard's
single.
The
Lady Bucs added to their lead with two more in the third on
Brittany York's two-run home run with Wellons aboard to make the
score 5-0.
The
Camels threatened in the fourth as McGee reach on a one-out walk. A
pass ball moved her to second. Lauren Stephan's second hit
of the day moved her to third but the Camels were retired in order
to keep the margin at five.
Charleston
Southern added two more to the lead in the fifth on Wellons' single
and Ashley Fowler's sacrifice fly.
Campbell
scored their lone run of the game in the seventh when Stephan led
off with a double and was driven by on Cassie Webb's single.
Stephan
had a strong performance at the plate with three hits.
Campbell
now heads down the road for the Florida portion of the spring break
trip with games against Bethune-Cookman starting at 1 p.m. on March
3.
