BUIES CREEK, N.C. The Campbell wrestling team was defeated
by Liberty in a 1:00pm matchup on Tuesday by a final score of
27-12. The Camels' fell to
3-9 with the loss, while Liberty moved to 6-7-1.
The CU grapplers got out to a hot start beginning at the 197 pound
weight class with a Parker Burns decision over Andrew Wilson by a
5-1 margin to give the Camels a 3-0 advantage. The win was Burns' eighth on the year
overall and his team leading seventh in dual matches.
Campbell would continue their hot streak with victories by Khiry
Reid and CJ Gittens. Seven
minutes would not be enough time to settle the heavyweight bout as
Reid and and Liberty's Brandon Johnson would go to overtime to
decide a winner.
After 38 seconds of extra time, Reid claimed a takedown to get the
win and a 6-0 Camel lead.
Gittens would then pick up a victory by forfeit to finish the
Campbell run.
The Camels would have no answer for the Flames after that as
Liberty picked up a technical fall, a pin, and a major decision in
the next three matchups.
The Flames would take the remaining four matches by decision to get
the final tally.
The Campbell wrestlers will head to Pittsburgh, Pa. and the East
Regional Duals on Saturday, February 7 at 8:00am.
