CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-Senior Karlie Love made the most of opening day
with two home runs and five RBIs to power Campbell's softball team
(1-0) to a 8-4 win over Tennessee Tech (0-1) in their first game of
the 2009 season at the Chattanooga Challenge on Friday afternoon at
Hargraves Field. The Camels will take on the host school
Chattanooga at 5:30 p.m. later this tonight at Frost Stadium.
Junior
Brittany Stanley picked up the win for Campbell going 5.2 innings
with four runs allowed (three earned) and a pair of strikeouts.
Sophomore Katie Woodcock, making her first-ever appearance in the
circle, came in relief to pick the save with 1.1 innings of
scoreless softball.
Tennessee
Tech started the scoring with three in the first inning. After
Cassidy Steen singled and Whitney Cumming walked, Holly Thomas hit
a three-run home run to give the Golden Eagles the lead. The Camels
struck back with a two spot of their own in the bottom of the
frame. Sophomore Katie Hinton walked and stole second and came
around to score on Love's first home run of the season and the
game.
Stanley
escaped a sticky situation in the third inning. After loading the
bases she induced two infield pop-ups and a ground out to keep the
margin at a single run.
The
Golden Eagles did add a run to their lead in the fifth with Steen
reaching on a throwing error from the shortstop, moving to second
on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on the double to left center from
Thomas.
The
Camels answered with a four spot in their half of the fifth. The
rally started with two outs as junior Robin Leathers and Hinton
walked. Freshman Taylor McGee then looped a single to left to score
Leathers from second. It was the first hit of McGee's career.
Hinton and McGee would then score on Love's second home run of the
game and give Campbell the 6-4 advantage.
CU
added two more in the sixth. Sophomore Keeli Michael reached on a
one-out single to the shortstop. Lizzie Goldbach followed with a
single of her own. Both Michael and Goldbach hustled around to
score on Leathers' double over centerfielders head to make the
final margin 8-4.
The
Camels will be back in action tonight at the Frost Stadium with a
5:30 p.m. game against Chattanooga.
