CHATTANOOGA,
Tenn.- After Campbell took the lead late in the second game on a
Karlie Love's two-run home run, the Lady Mocs stormed back and used
a three-run home run off the bat of Tiffany Baker to capture the
7-5 victory in CU's second game of the day at the Chattanooga
Challenge on Friday, Feb. 6 at Frost Stadium.
The
trouble for Campbell began when Lyndsey Stiles reached on an
infield single. She moved to second as Lauren Flores reach her
sacrifice bunt attempt when the ball was thrown away. Lauren
Stephan was then able to record two outs in a row to nearly escape
the jam before giving up the three-run home run to Baker.
After
winning their first game of the season over Tennessee Tech in the
behind the power of Karlie Love the Camels nearly rode Love to the
late-game victory. In a game that had as many twists and turns as
their were innings Love was down to her last strike with two outs
in the top of the seventh when she launched her third home run of
the season deep over the right centerfield fence with Katie Hinton
aboard to give Campbell a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh.
The
loss evens Campbell's record at 1-1 on the season, while the win is
the second for the Lady Mocs in as many games.
UTC
scored what was then the go-ahead run in the sixth. The trouble for
Campbell began when Baker singled to start off the inning. She
moved to second on the wild pitch and took third on a fly out from
Tia Blosser. Baker would then come in to score on the sacrifice fly
from Jenni Martin to take a 4-3 lead setting up the Love
heroics.
The
Camels got off to the early lead in the second game. Junior Robin
Leather fought off several tough pitches before drawing a walk.
Sophomore Katie Hinton followed with a rope to left field. After a
fly out junior Karlie Love singled to left to load the bases.
Sophomore Lauren Stephan followed with the biggest hit of the
inning with her double to score Leathers and Hinton and give
Campbell a 2-0 lead.
The
Lady Mocs stormed back with three of their own in the bottom half
of the frame. Lauren Flores stroked a single, Michelle Fuzzard
walked and both came in to score on Toni Hutchinson's first home
run of the season to give UTC the lead back.
In
what was shaping up to be a back-and-forth affair the Camels tied
the game back up at three in the top of the second on Hinton's
first home run of the game. The game remained knotted until all the
late-game fireworks.
The
Camels will be back in action tomorrow starting at 10:30 a.m.
against Troy back at Hargraves Field.
