SPARTANBURG,
S.C. Taylor McGee hit an extra inning solo
blast in the top of the eighth inning to give Campbell (18-6, 4-1
Atlantic Sun) a 1-0 lead in a thrilling victory over USC Upstate
(13-4, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) at Cyrill Stadium.
Brittany
Stanley (5-1) was outstanding in the circle for Campbell going all
eight innings with only three hits allowed. Morgan Childers (10-2)
was nearly unhittable for USC Upstate with 14 strikeouts in her
eight innings.
The
Camels picked up their first hit of the game on McGee's leadoff
single in the third inning. A sacrifice moved her to second. After
a pop out she then took third on Katie Hinton's single. Childers
got out of the jam though with a strikeout.
The
Spartans threatened in the fourth inning with Kim Brasil reaching
on a catcher's interference. She moved to second on Heidi Gibbs'
single. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up. Stanley was able to
get out of the sticky situations with a pop out and strikeout to
end the inning.
In the
sixth USC Upstate again put together a two-out rally. Crislyn
Chewning singled and moved to second on the walk to Courtney
Feldon. Stanley was again able to escape trouble by inducing Lauren
Quevedo to pop out to first.
The
bottom of the seventh proved to be exciting with Keri Sarratt
reaching on a one-out single. After a fly out, pinch runner Melissa
Lockey moved to second on the error on the CU shortstop. Stanley
was again able to keep the game scoreless with a ground
out.
