Softball Wins Thriller Over USC Upstate, 1-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Taylor McGee hit an extra inning solo blast in the top of the eighth inning to give Campbell (18-6, 4-1 Atlantic Sun) a 1-0 lead in a thrilling victory over USC Upstate (13-4, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) at Cyrill Stadium.

Brittany Stanley (5-1) was outstanding in the circle for Campbell going all eight innings with only three hits allowed. Morgan Childers (10-2) was nearly unhittable for USC Upstate with 14 strikeouts in her eight innings.

The Camels picked up their first hit of the game on McGee's leadoff single in the third inning. A sacrifice moved her to second. After a pop out she then took third on Katie Hinton's single. Childers got out of the jam though with a strikeout.

The Spartans threatened in the fourth inning with Kim Brasil reaching on a catcher's interference. She moved to second on Heidi Gibbs' single. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up. Stanley was able to get out of the sticky situations with a pop out and strikeout to end the inning.

In the sixth USC Upstate again put together a two-out rally. Crislyn Chewning singled and moved to second on the walk to Courtney Feldon. Stanley was again able to escape trouble by inducing Lauren Quevedo to pop out to first.

The bottom of the seventh proved to be exciting with Keri Sarratt reaching on a one-out single. After a fly out, pinch runner Melissa Lockey moved to second on the error on the CU shortstop. Stanley was again able to keep the game scoreless with a ground out.
