BUIES CREEK, N.C. On a balmy 70 degree day Campbell's
football team kept working toward improvement for the 2009 season
with their sixth practice of the spring on Saturday, March 28 at
Barker-Lane Stadium.

The session, which lasted 2 hours and 20
minutes, included the first simulated scrimmage of the spring. The
controlled scrimmage started with nickel and third down situations
with the offense and the defense going head-to-head. Among the
other controlled drills during the scrimmage were field goals,
punts, kickoffs and kickoff returns, goal line and first through
third down situations. The goal line situations were highlighted by
a big play from both the offense and the defense. Freshman
defensive back Brandon
Chandler was able to scoop up a loose fumble and return
the ball 97-yards for a score. The offense also had their moments
including quarterback Daniel Polk hooking up with
tight end Josh
Owens in the corner of the end zone for touchdown.

"We have improved tremendously as a football
team over the first two weeks of practice", head coach Dale Steele
explained. "While we are not ready to start the season tomorrow, we
are starting to look more like an improved football team every day.
The execution is there at times, although we are not consistent
enough. We still have several positions where we are waiting for
someone to take control. One of those positions is at quarterback.
We are still looking for one of our three quarterbacks to emerge
and show us that they can play consistent enough to win in this
league. I have been pleased with the continued improvement of the
wide receivers. I also feel that the running game is coming along
very well. Defensively the effort has consistently been there
despite a few injuries. In today's scrimmage we didn't have too
many big plays from either the offense or the defense, which shows
that we are sticking to our assignments on both sides of the ball
and improving our focus. At this point the best thing about spring
practice is that we still have two weeks to get better and continue
to show the steady improvement that we as a coaching staff are
looking for."
