Softball Opens Atlantic Sun Conference Play With Sweep of Jacksonville, 10-0 & 11-0; Coach Peterson sets Campbell career wins mark

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Behind a three home run performance from junior Robin Leathers, Campbell's softball team (16-5, 2-0 Atlantic Sun) swept a doubleheader (10-0 & 11-0) from Jacksonville (9-12, 0-2 Atlantic Sun on Friday, March 6 in Jacksonville, Fla. at the JU Softball Complex. All three of Leathers' hits left the field of play in the two games in which she also drove in a total of eight runs. Senior Hilary Wheatley continued her hot-hitting with a 3-for-5 afternoon with a home run and five RBIs. Sophomore Amanda Miller tallied five hits in her eight at-bats with two RBIs and runs scored. Junior Brittany Stanley had four hits including a home run and five RBIs in the sweep. The Camels pounded out 22 hits and 21 run in the two games.

The CU pitching staff also did work with both freshman Christina Melton and Stanley throwing complete game shutouts. Melton went the distance in the first game with four hits allowed and five strikeouts. Stanley did the deed in the second game with two hits allowed, no walks and five punch outs. For the pitching staff it was their third and fourth shutouts of the week. The Camels have now thrown five consecutive shutouts. The five straight shutouts are a school record breaking the previous mark of four set by the 1996 team (Feb. 26-March 2) and the 1995 team (March 2-7)

In the first game the Camels scored in every inning but the fifth with Leathers doing major damaged with two home runs and five RBIs. Stanley also homered with her first inning three-run blast.

Leathers was a vital part of the second game scoring with a grand slam in fourth inning. Wheatley followed later in the frame with her second home run of the season. Wheatley has now driven in 11 runs on her nine hits for the year and has also crossed the plate eight more times. The Camels as a team have homered 40 times in the first 21 games.

Campbell completes the spring break road trip with a pair of games against North Florida starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7.
