BUIES CREEK, N.C. Behind the strong
pitching of junior Brittany Stanley and sophomore Lauren Stephan
the Campbell softball team (29-11, 14-4 Atlantic Sun) swept a
conference doubleheader from Stetson (20-23, 3-9 Atlantic Sun) by
scores of 6-0 and 3-0 on Saturday, April 11th at the
Eakes Athletic Complex.
Campbell also set a new single season school record with the three
home run hit on the day and have now hit 67 home runs this season.
The win in the second game was Campbell's 14th in
conference play this season, which ties the school record set by
the 1995 team.
Stanley (11-3) started the day going the
distance for her fourth complete game and shutout of the season.
The junior struck out a season-high eight and only allowed one walk
in posting the 48th win of her career. The win moved her
into a second place tie with Tina Echerer (1994-97) for career
victories at Campbell. The loss went to Erica Demers (9-12). Demers
allowed all six runs and fanned eight.
Stephan (9-3) matched Stanley's first game
effort with a complete game shutout in the second game. The
complete game was the sophomore's sixth of the season and shutout
was her second of the week and fourth of the season. The loss went
to Amanda Lindsey (10-10), who struck out seven in six innings.
After getting no-hit for the first three innings
of the second game, freshman Christina Melton started the rally in
the fourth inning was a leadoff walk. A sacrifice bunt moved her to
second before Stephan helped her own cause with CU's first hit of
the game, a two-run blast to left field to give the Camels a 2-0
advantage. The home run was Stephan's fourth of the season.
CU added a run to its lead in the fifth inning
when Keeli Michael was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a ground
out and scampered home on Katie Hinton's RBI single up the
middle.
Stephan was in control for most of the game in
only surrendering five hits and striking out four. She also helped
with the bat with two RBIs.
Game
One (Campbell 6 & Stetson 0)
The Camels jumped all over Demers in the first
game. Robin Leathers led off with a walk, the first of three times
she would reach base without a hit in the game which also snapped
her career best 10 game hitting streak. A Hinton single moved
Leathers to second. After a fly out, Melton reach base with a
fielder's choice in which Leathers and Hinton moved up a base.
After a strikeout, Amanda Miller came through with a single up the
middle to plate Leathers and Hinton with the first two runs of the
game.
CU added two runs to the lead in the second.
Freshman Taylor McGee led off the inning with line drive shot over
the left field wall. The home run was McGee's seventh of the year.
Leathers was then hit by Demers offering and moved to second on a
ground out. Karlie Love then pushed a single through the right side
to score Leathers with the second run of the inning and fourth of
the game.
The Camels offense completed the scoring with
two runs in the fifth. Love was hit by a pitch and was aboard for
Melton's fifth home run of the year.
The
Camels return to action with a road trip to Orangeburg, S.C. to
take on South Carolina State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14
starting at 2 p.m.
