BUIES CREEK, N.C.-- Junior pitcher Brittany
Stanley did everything but sell concessions in leading Campbell's
softball team (31-11, 16-4 Atlantic Sun) to two wins, 7-0 and 7-6,
over Florida Gulf Coast (42-8, 10-4 Atlantic Sun) on Saturday,
April 18 at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Stanley won the first game
with a four-hit shutout and then came back in relief to win the
second game due in part to her game-winning two-run single in the
bottom of the seventh.
:
Stanley (13-3) started the day going the distance for her fifth
complete game and shutout of the season. The junior tied her
season-high with eight strikeouts and only allowed two walk and
four hits in posting the 49th win of her career. The win
moved her into a second place all by herself in career victories at
Campbell. The shutout was even more impressive as it was only the
second time that the Eagles' offense had been shutout. The Eagles
boasted one of the most potent offenses in the country and were
average over seven runs a game in their first 48 games. In the
second game, Stanley was then called on in relief in the top of the
seventh inning and was able to escape a first and third one out
situation without giving up a run to keep the Camels down only a
run, 6-5. Stanley is now 10-1 in conference play this season and
lowered her conference ERA to an amazing 0.63.
The Campbell seventh inning rally started with
Katie Hinton getting plunked by a Cassidy Rash offering. Karlie Love then followed with a
single through the right side. An errant throw from the FGCU right
fielder allowed Love to take second and moved Hinton to third.
After Lizzie Goldbach was inserted to run for Love, Christina
Melton was walked to load the bases and set up Stanley for her
heroics. Stanley took the next offering promptly up the middle to
plate Hinton was the tying run and Goldbach was the winning run and
give the Camels the comeback 7-6 victory. The consecutive losses
are the first time all season that FGCU has not only gotten swept
but also experienced a two-game losing streak.
CU started the scoring way back in the first
inning with Hinton pushing a single through the left side, moving
to second on a ground out and coming into score on Lauren Stephan's
RBI single.
FGCU was able to answer with a run of its own in
the top of the second. Courtney Platt reached on a fielder's choice
and came in to score on Jessica Carter's double.
The Camels tallied two more runs in the bottom
of the frame. Keeli Michael singled and moved all the way to third
on Robin Leathers' double. Hinton then punished a single up the
middle to plate Michael and Leathers for the second and third runs
of the game for CU's offense.
The Eagles plated a run of their own in the top
of the third as Jessica Paez's single drove in Jessica Gray to make
the margin 3-2
The Campbell offense kept the foot on the pedal
with two more run in the third inning. Love lead off the frame with
a blast to right field. The home run was Love's 14th
home run of the season. After pop out Stephan, who started the game
on the mound, helped her own cause with a line drive shot to left
field. The home run was Stephan's fifth of the season and
Campbell's 70th of the year.
The score
remained 5-2 until the fifth when FGCU exploded for four runs.
Lauren Ziegler started the rally with a bunt single. Gray then
reached on an infield single. A Paez single loaded the bases for
the most feared hitter in the Atlantic Sun, Cheyenne Jenks. Jenks
came into the game batting .477 with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs.
Rather then pitch to the slugger the Camels walked the senior to
plate Ziegler from third. Samantha Waldron then reached on
fielder's choice in which Gray was gunned down at the plate. Platt
then came up with a single through the right side to score Paez.
Jenks was gunned down at the plate attempting to score on a
beautiful throw from rightfielder Hilary Wheatley. A fielding error
by the CU shortstop off the sharply hit grounder from Carter
allowed Waldron to score. Lindsey Green followed with a single to
right centerfield to score Platt.
Campbell then brought in a reliever, Katie Woodcock. Woodcock's
first offering popped away from the CU catcher momentarily but
Taylor McGee recovered quickly and made a perfect throw to Woodcock
covering home and getting out a sliding Carter at the dish to keep
the score at 6-5. The Camels amazing enough were able to record all
three outs in the inning at home plate.
The game remained the same until the seventh
when Stanley was able to escape the sticky situation and then come
through with her own heroics in the bottom of the frame.
Hinton had a great second game in going 3-for-3
with two runs scored and RBIs. Stephan also had multiple hits to go
with her multiple RBIs. Stanley was also able to drive in two runs
in her only at bat of the game.
The loss went to Rash (7-2), who allowed both
runs without retiring a batter in the seventh inning.
Game
One (Campbell 7 & Florida Gulf Coast 0)
Stanley was the story of the first game in
limiting one of the more potent offenses in the nation to a scant
four hits and no runs in seven innings from the circle. The loss
was tagged on Courtney McDaniel (19-1) and was her first in 20
decisions this season. McDaniel allowed all seven runs (three
earned) in her innings worked.
The Camels were able to score all seven of their
runs all in the fifth inning to break open what had been a great
pitcher duel to that point. After the strikeout to start the frame,
McGee was able to dent to scoreboard with her blast to centerfield.
The home run was McGee's eighth home run of the season and the
second time this year that the freshman was able to stop a
scoreless game in the fifth inning or later as she also did the
feat in the eighth inning against USC Upstate. After another
strikeout the Camel offense got in gear to the tune of six more
runs. Leathers started the rally with single. Hinton then reached
pushed a single through the right side to move Leathers up a base.
Love was then hit with a McDaniel offering to load the bases.
Christina Melton followed with a single through the left side to
score Leathers and Hinton. Stanley then reached on fielding error
by the FGCU shortstop to load the bases. Amanda Miller followed
with a single to score Love. Wheatley unclogged the bases with her
double to right center off the glove of the Florida Gulf Coast
centerfielder. Wheatley's double was her fourth of the season and
scored Melton, Stanley and Miller.
The best opportunity to score for the Eagles
came in the third inning as Ziegler singled through the right side
on a one-out single. She was quickly erased on a fielder's choice
that allowed Paez to reach. With the feared Jenks at the plate,
Stanley didn't waste a pitch in reaching back to throw three
straight fastballs by her and nip the scoring opportunity in the
bud.
The
Camels return to action with a road trip to Elon, N.C. to take on
Elon in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 21 starting at 4
p.m.
