BUIES CREEK, N.C. The Campbell softball team (34-12, 16-4
Atlantic Sun) has earned the top seed in the upcoming conference
tournament the league office announced Monday. The Camels had
finished A-Sun play for the season and were guaranteed at least a
tie for the regular season title after sweeping Florida Gulf Coast
two weekends ago, but after Lipscomb-FGCU split the doubleheader on
Saturday, April 25, the Camels have now earned the top seed and a
regular season championship for the first time since 1995.
The Camels will face off with the host school
Stetson on the first day of the Atlantic Sun Tournament presented
by Holiday Inn Express on May 7th at a TBA time. CU
defeated the Hatters twice this season and also twice in the
conference tournament last season on their way to the NCAA
Tournament for the first time in 13 years.
The second and third seed in the tournament have
yet to be determined with Lipscomb and Mercer still fighting for
seeding heading into next weekend. Lipscomb plays against Belmont
and needs to drop both games to see Mercer move up from the third
seed.
The first round matchup for May 7th
with seeding numbers goes:
#1 Campbell (32-16, 16-4 A-Sun) vs. #6 Stetson
(22-29, 5-15 A-Sun)
#2 Lipscomb (35-12, 13-5 A-Sun) / Mercer (35-16,
14-6 A-Sun) vs. #5 ETSU (25-24, 6-14 A-Sun)
#3 Lipscomb (35-12, 13-5 A-Sun) / Mercer (35-16,
14-6 A-Sun) vs. #4 Jacksonville (23-29, 7-13 A-Sun)
The Camels are slated to finish the regular
season at the ECU Tournament with games against Virginia Tech and
East Carolina on May 2nd at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.,
respectively
