CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Campbell's softball team
(38-16) lost a back-and-forth affair to Radford (41-14) by a 9-5
score on Friday, May 15 on the second day of the Chapel Hill
Regional in the NCAA Tournament. With the loss, the Camels' 2009
season has ended.
Radford's biggest blow of the game came off the
bat of freshman Leigh Godfrey to give RU the 6-5 advantage in the
sixth inning. The home run was Godfrey's second blast of the
game.
Radford scored first with two runs in the first
inning. Kristen Shifflett was hit by a pitch, moved to second on an
infield pop out and came in to score on Nicole Beall's single up
the middle. Beall moved to second on the attempted throw home, took
third on a steal and came in to score on the throwing error by the
Campbell catcher on the steal attempt.
The Camels wasted a leadoff single by junior
Robin Leathers in the bottom of the frame. Leathers started the
inning by pushing a single into left field. She then took second on
the fielding error by the Radford left fielder, but was stranded as
the next three were retired in order.
CU scored three in the second. Freshman
Christina Melton was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved
all the way to third on senior Karlie Love's double. Sophomore
Keeli Michael then reached on a fielding error from the second
baseman in which pinch runner Brittani Hubbard was tagged out as
she strayed a bit off second. Junior Brittany Stanley followed with
a single up the middle to score Melton from third. Lizzie Goldbach,
who had been inserted to run for Stanley, stole second. On the play
the trail runner Michael stole home and scored. Leathers drove in
the third run of the inning with her single up the middle to plate
Goldbach from second.
Radford took advantage of two Campbell errors to
tie the game up in the third. Lauren Williams reached on a fielding
error by the CU second baseman. Leigh Godfrey pushed a single
through the box to move Williams to third on the play. Godfrey took
second on the attempted play at third. With Sarah Himan at the
plate, Williams was then tagged out on a missed bunt attempt. On
the play Godfrey wisely took third. Godfrey would scamper home on
the next play as the batted ball from Himan went through the
Campbell third baseman's legs.
In what
was shaping up to be quite the back-and-forth affair, Taylor McGee
punched a single over the shortstop's head to start the Campbell
third. After a strike out, Love unloaded on a Kellie Snooks
offering and deposited it deep over the right field wall, where it
banged high off the lightstand and gave CU a 5-3
advantage.
RU tied
the game up with back-to-back home runs from Godfrey and Shifflett
to start the fifth inning. It was the second time in the last three
games that the duo has hit consecutive home runs for
Radford.
CU
threatened in their half of the fifth when Love banged a double off
the wall. Michael followed with a single up the middle to move Love
to third. Kelley was reinserted into the game to pitch for Radford
and quickly retired the first two she faced. After issuing an
intentional walk to Leathers, she struck out Katie Hinton to end
the inning.
In the
sixth Radford quickly capitalized on the change in momentum with
Godfrey hitting her second home run of the day and eighth blast of
the season to give RU the 6-5 lead.
The
Highlanders added three insurance runs in the seventh. Shannon
Keefe hit a two-run blast and Jessica Everhart scored from third on
a wild pitch to make the final score 9-5.
The loss
went to Melton (8-7), who allowed a run in her two innings of work.
Chelsea Kelley (25-8) earned the victory for Radford.
Love lead the offensive charge for Campbell with
three hits and a home run.
Notes:
Karlie Love hit her 16th home run of the season, which places her
second all-time at Campbell for home runs in a single season...the
80 wins that Campbell accumulated over the last two season is tied
for the second most ever recorded over any two-year period of time
in softball at CU....Campbell ended the season with a school-record
81 home runs.
