BUIES CREEK, N.C. The Campbell softball team (34-14, 16-4)
heads to this week's Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament as the top
seed. As the top seed the Camels will start off the double
elimination tournament taking on sixth seeded Stetson at 1 p.m. The
winner of the Campbell and Stetson game will then play the loser of
the Mercer and Jacksonville game at 6 p.m. that evening. The loser
of the Campbell/Stetson game will take on the loser of
Lipscomb/ETSU in an elimination game at 4 p.m.
The Camels are the reigning Atlantic Sun
Champions after racing through the 2008 tournament as the fifth
seed and securing the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA
Championship. CU started last season's play with a 3-2 win over
Stetson. The Camels came back later that evening to defeat ETSU
6-3. Campbell's run continued the following evening with a 5-2 win
over ETSU. CU then defeated Stetson in the championship game on
former outfielder Courtney Quinn's extra
inning home run to win their first A-Sun Championship in 13 years
and make the NCAA's for the first time in the same amount of time.
Keeli Michael
hit exceptional well in last season's conference tournament with
five hits, a home run, four RBI's and a .455 batting average.
Junior Brittany
Stanley also stood out with a 4-0 record and a 2.03 ERA in
throwing all 31 innings for Campbell. For her efforts Stanley was
named the tournament MVP. All-time Campbell is 17-11 in Atlantic
Sun Tournament action and has won at least one game in all six of
its previous appearances and three times have won four games in
A-Sun Tournament play.
Stetson (22-29, 5-15 Atlantic Sun) played its
way into the conference tournament with victories over Belmont two
weeks ago. The wins snapped the Hatters' 15-game skid. Stetson is
led by junior outfielder Amy Joyce, who is hitting
.308 with 32 runs scored and 49 hits this season. Senior Andrea Migliori
provides the power with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs. The Hatters
pitching staff is led by the duo of Amanda Lindsey and Erica Demers. Lindsey
has won 11 games with an ERA of 1.71 and 183 strikeouts. Demers has
won 10 games with a 1.88 ERA and 160 strikeouts. The Camels were
able to defeat Stetson by 6-0 and 3-0 scores earlier in the
season.
The winner of the first round match up between
Campbell and Stetson will take on the loser of Mercer/Jacksonville
at 6 p.m. on May 7th. The loser of CU and Stetson takes
on loser of Lipscomb/ETSU in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on May
7th.
