Softball Off To Atlantic Sun Tournament This Week

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell softball team (34-14, 16-4) heads to this week's Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament as the top seed. As the top seed the Camels will start off the double elimination tournament taking on sixth seeded Stetson at 1 p.m. The winner of the Campbell and Stetson game will then play the loser of the Mercer and Jacksonville game at 6 p.m. that evening. The loser of the Campbell/Stetson game will take on the loser of Lipscomb/ETSU in an elimination game at 4 p.m.

The Camels are the reigning Atlantic Sun Champions after racing through the 2008 tournament as the fifth seed and securing the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. CU started last season's play with a 3-2 win over Stetson. The Camels came back later that evening to defeat ETSU 6-3. Campbell's run continued the following evening with a 5-2 win over ETSU. CU then defeated Stetson in the championship game on former outfielder Courtney Quinn's extra inning home run to win their first A-Sun Championship in 13 years and make the NCAA's for the first time in the same amount of time. Keeli Michael hit exceptional well in last season's conference tournament with five hits, a home run, four RBI's and a .455 batting average. Junior Brittany Stanley also stood out with a 4-0 record and a 2.03 ERA in throwing all 31 innings for Campbell. For her efforts Stanley was named the tournament MVP. All-time Campbell is 17-11 in Atlantic Sun Tournament action and has won at least one game in all six of its previous appearances and three times have won four games in A-Sun Tournament play.

Stetson (22-29, 5-15 Atlantic Sun) played its way into the conference tournament with victories over Belmont two weeks ago. The wins snapped the Hatters' 15-game skid. Stetson is led by junior outfielder Amy Joyce, who is hitting .308 with 32 runs scored and 49 hits this season. Senior Andrea Migliori provides the power with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs. The Hatters pitching staff is led by the duo of Amanda Lindsey and Erica Demers. Lindsey has won 11 games with an ERA of 1.71 and 183 strikeouts. Demers has won 10 games with a 1.88 ERA and 160 strikeouts. The Camels were able to defeat Stetson by 6-0 and 3-0 scores earlier in the season.

The winner of the first round match up between Campbell and Stetson will take on the loser of Mercer/Jacksonville at 6 p.m. on May 7th. The loser of CU and Stetson takes on loser of Lipscomb/ETSU in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on May 7th.
