Hilary
Wheatley hit a second inning grand slam to lead Campbell's
softball team (35-14) to a 7-5 comeback victory over Stetson
(22-30) in the team's first game of the Atlantic Sun Tournament
presented by Holiay Inn Express on Thursday, May 7th at Patricia
Wilson Field.
The
Hatters took the early lead in the first inning on Andrea Migliori's blast to
left field. The home run was her 13th of the season.
Stetson added two more in the frame as Katie Lawrence was hit by a
pitch and came in to score on Jessica Lokeinsky's second
home run of the season.
The
Camels took control in the second inning. Freshman Christina Melton and
sophomore Amanda
Miller pushed back-to-back singles through the infield.
After a strikeout, junior Brittany Stanley was able
to reach on a fielder's choice in which Melton was able to knock
the ball out on the attempted tag to stay on base. Wheatley then
worked a full count before unloading for her third home run and
second grand slam of the season to give Campbell the 4-3
lead.
CU
added two runs to the lead in the fourth inning. Wheatley started
the rally with a walk. Sophomore Keeli Michael then singled
up the middle. After a ground out to move the runners up, sophomore
Katie Hinton
hit a grounder to the Stetson second baseman to score Wheatley from
third. Back-to-back walks to senior Karlie Love and Melton
scored Michael from third with the second run of the inning and
increase the score to 6-3.
Campbell
added a
run in the sixth inning. Melton started the frame with a single to
right. Miller then ripped a single to right. The ball bounded past
the charging right fielder allowing Melton to score all the way
from first and move Miller to third.
Stetson
finished the scoring with two runs in the seventh inning on
Migliori's second home run of the game and 14th of the season to
make the final score 7-5.
Stanley
(16-4)
earned the victory going the distance with six hits allowed and six
strikeouts. The junior got better as the game went along and only
allowed three hits after the first inning. The loss went to Amanda
Lindsey (11-14).
Melton
had a strong afternoon with three hits, a walk and two runs scored.
Wheatley had an afternoon with two hits, two runs scored and four
driven in.
The
Camels continue play in the Atlantic Sun Tournament with a game
tonight against Jacksonville starting at 8 p.m.
