DELAND, Fla. Senior
Hilary Wheatley continued her strong hitting with two more hits and
an RBI to lead Campbell's softball team (36-14) to a 5-1 win over
Jacksonville (24-31) in the team's second game of the Atlantic Sun
Tournament presented by Holiday Inn Express on Thursday, May 7 at
Patricia Wilson Field.
The
game was scoreless for the first three innings until junior Robin
Leathers launched her 15th home run of the season to the
opposite field and give CU the 1-0 early advantage. The Camels kept
the offense going as sophomore Katie Hinton ripped a single up the
middle and scored all the way from first on senior Karlie Love's
double. Freshman Brittani Hubbard was inserted to run for Love and
moved to third on a fly out before scampering home on Taylor
McGee's single up the middle to increase the margin to
3-0.
The
Dolphins answered in the fourth inning with a run as Ashley Novak
singled and came all the way in to score on Amanda Schmidt's
double.
The
Camels added two insurance runs in the sixth inning when Wheatley
doubled to left to score McGee from second. Pinch runner Lizzie
Goldbach then scampered home with the fifth run on sophomore Keeli
Michael's infield single.
Brittany
Stanley (17-4)
won her second game of the day in allowing four hits and one run
with seven strikeouts. The junior is now 6-0 in her last six games
of A-Sun Tournament play.
The
Camels continue play in the Atlantic Sun Tournament with a game on
May 8th against Mercer starting at 1 p.m.
