DELAND,
Fla. Junior Brittany Stanley was magical once again in
leading Campbell's softball team (38-14) to a 1-0 victory over
Mercer (40-19) to capture the team's second consecutive Atlantic
Sun Championship presented by Holiday Inn Express on Saturday, May
9th at Patricia Wilson Field. The Camels will be making
their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and third
appearance overall. For the second consecutive day all the offense
the Camels would need was supplied by a freshman Taylor McGee home
run. This is the first time since 2004 that the A-Sun title game
has been decided by a 1-0 score.
Stanley (19-4) threw her second consecutive
shutout of the Bears in allowing just six hits with five punch
outs. For her efforts and going 4-0 in the tournament, the junior
was named the tournament MVP for the second consecutive season.
Jenni Holtz (23-10) took the tough loss in allowing only one run in
six innings from the circle.
The
Camels threatened in the first as Katie Hinton doubled to right
center field. Senior Karlie Love was intentionally walked to put
two on base. Holtz then buckled down and retired the next two in
order.
The Bears
would put together a rally in their half of the second as Emi
Sherrill reach on a one-out infield single. Cassy Nielson followed
with a bounded single through the infield to put two aboard, but
sophomore Keeli Michael made a nice running catch of a line drive
to double off the Mercer pinch runner, Megan Rutherford, at second
and end the threat.
The
Camels promptly capitalized on the change in momentum as McGee
unloaded on Holtz's second offering in the second inning to give CU
the 1-0 lead. The home run was McGee's 11th of the
season and second in as many at bats in the tournament.
Stanley
escaped a
slight situation in the fifth when Nielson reached on a one-out
walk. After Anna Johnson was inserted for her and stole second the
junior stiffened and retired the next two in order to keep the
score at 1-0 Campbell.
Mercer
nearly tied the game up in the sixth. Holly Oglesbee singled to
start the frame, moved to second on a wild pitch and took third on
a wild throw off a line out to the third baseman. Stanley again
proved to be up the situation, aided by the sliding catch in left
field by sophomore Lizzie Goldbach, to get out of the inning
unscathed.
Besides
the MVP award captured by Stanley, the junior was also named to the
Atlantic Sun All-Tournament team along with senior Hilary Wheatley
and McGee.
The
Camels will now await word on where they are headed for the NCAA
Tournament in tomorrow evening's selection show on ESPNU at 10 p.m.
More details to follow as they become available.
