Softball's Katie Woodcock Leads Nation In Saves

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell sophomore relief pitcher Katie Woodcock reached rarified air in 2009 in tying for the national lead in saves with six, the NCAA announced recently.

Woodcock, an Oshawa, Ontario native, led the conference and tied with San Diego State's Samantha Beasley for the national lead with six saves in 2009. Besides leading the conference and nation in saves, Woodcock also ranked first in the Atlantic Sun in games in relief (20) and games finished (18). The sophomore's six saves were the second most recorded in a single season by a Campbell pitcher behind the 10 registered by Annie Lewis in 2001. Woodcock's six career saves also place her second on Campbell's career list behind Lewis.

On the year, Woodcock went 1-0 with a 2.36 ERA with 27 strikeouts in her 26.2 innings pitched.

Campbell's softball team had a banner year in 2009 in totaling a 38-16 record, winning the Atlantic Sun Regular Season and Conference Championships, setting a school record for home runs and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season.

Looking at other team categories in the NCAA rankings the Camels placed third in home runs per game (1.5), 11th in slugging percentage (.508), 15th in scoring (5.72), 31st in winning percentage (.704), 40th in batting average (.294), 45th in double plays per game (0.37), 52nd in earned run average (2.35) and 53rd in fielding percentage (.966).

Individually, Campbell also had several other players that ranked among the NCAA leaders. Senior Karlie Love ranked 16th in home runs (16), 21st in home runs per game (0.3) and RBI's per game (0.98), 26th in on-base percentage (.508), 27th in slugging percentage (.755), tied for 68th in walks (0.56) 80th in batting average (.384) and 83rd in hit by pitches (0.17). Junior Robin Leathers placed 19th in home runs per game (0.3), 27th in home runs (15) and 96th in slugging percentage (.641). Sophomore Katie Hinton ranked 46th in runs per game (0.85) and tied for 68th in walks (0.56). Freshman catcher Taylor McGee placed 58th in home runs (12) and 74th in home runs per game (0.22). From the circle, junior Brittany Stanley was 39th in shutouts (8), 64th in earned run average (1.79) and 71st in wins (19).
