BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell senior middle blocker Ashley
Weers has been named the Atlantic Sun's Volleyball Player of
the Week after leading the Camels to their fifth consecutive
conference win, and its best league start in program history.
Weers averaged 3.00 kills and 1.00 blocks per set for the Camels,
converting 36 of 82 attack attempts with just eight errors for a
.341 rate. For the year, Weers leads the A-Sun with a .373 average,
and has ranked as high as 36th nationally this season.
Weers' 12 blocks, that included seven assisted and five solo, tied
for a team high, matched only by junior middle Caitlin
Bendy, who totaled 10 assisted and two solo.
This is the second A-Sun Player of the Week award for Weers this
season, after collecting the honor in the season's opening week.
The ninth Camel to be named an A-Sun Player of the Week, Weers is
the fourth student-athlete to be named POTW multiple times, and the
second to record those accolades in the same season. Only Abby
Jenkins (1998-01), a two-time all-conference (1998, 2001) and
all-tournament (1998, 2001) performer, in 2001 posted more than one
A-Sun Player of the Week in the same season. The only other current
Camel to collect A-Sun POTW honors is junior outside hitter Emily
Werner, who received the accolade during her freshman
season.
Weers recorded 13 kills on 26 attempts with only one error for a
.462 hitting percentage against East Tennessee State, her seventh
attack rate over .400 this season. Weers added two blocks, one solo
and one assisted. Against USC Upstate, Weers posted nine kills and
five blocks, including three assisted and two solo.
Earlier
in the week, the Littleton, Colo. native led the Camels with 14
kills on just 25 attempts with two miscues, hitting .480. Weers
also five blocks, three assisted and two solo, with an ace against
the Pirates in Buies Creek. Weers continued to move up on
Campbell's all-time blocks list as well, skipping both Jennie
Heires (232, 1989-90) and Femi
Alabi (234, 2005-07) for seventh on the total blocks list
against ECU. The senior middle has collected 243 total blocks in
her CU career, with 194 (No. 6 all-time) assisted and 49
solo.
Campbell now holds a 10-5 overall mark on the season and a 5-1
A-Sun tally for only the third time in program history. The mark
matches the records of both the 1998 and 2000 squads' first six
game totals. This year's Camels are also the third fastest Campbell
team to 10 wins in CU volleyball history, hitting the mark in 15
matches. The 1998 team hit double digit wins on its 14th
try, while in 1997, the Camels started the year 17-0. Campbell
gathered only seven overall wins and five conference victories a
year ago. The win on Saturday in Johnson City, Tenn. was also the
Camels' first ever over ETSU, with the Bucs taking all six previous
contests.
The
Camels will travel to North Carolina Central on Tuesday, facing the
Eagles for the second time this season. The teams first squared off
in Virginia's Jefferson Cup Tournament in Charlottesville, Va., as
Campbell took a 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-16, 25-14) win. Campbell is
5-2 all-time against the Eagles, and 5-1 mark since 2006. Tuesday's
match is slated for 7 p.m. inside McLendon-McDougald Gym.
Junior outside hitter Emily
Werner paced the Camels in that contest with 15 kills and a
.314 hitting percentage, adding three block assists and three
digs. Allyson
Goldbach, also a junior outside hitter, posted 11 scores to
join Werner in double figures, notching a double-double with 11
digs as well. Freshman outside hitter Jordan
Reaves and junior middle blocker Caitlin
Bendy combined for 13 kills and 15 points total, while junior
setter Paige
Tortorello recorded 33 assists and two aces. Sophomore
Lauren
Garza and senior Sarah
Hill fueled the Camel defense, combining for 24 digs.
Junior outside hitter Shantel Moore, meanwhile, led the Eagle with
a double-double, collecting 12 kills and 11 digs in the loss.
Senior middle Avaniki Campbell and junior outside hitter Belin
Behncke-Biney posted eight and nine kills, respectively for
NCCU.
The Eagles are coming off a 3-1 weekend in the NCCU Tournament,
with wins over Winston-Salem State, Hampton and North Carolina
A&T. NCCU's only loss came in the tournament's championship
game, dropping a 3-0 contest to Delaware State.
After their nonconference bout with NCCU on Tuesday, the Camels
will host Belmont on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Lipscomb at 2
p.m. on Saturday inside the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation
Center.
