CHARLOTTEVILLE, VA.-Virginia Commonwealth posted a .321 attack
percentage with 52 kills to hand Campbell volleyball a 3-0 loss
(18-25, 22-25, 19-25) to kick off Virginia's Holliday Inn Jefferson
Cup inside Memorial Gymnasium Friday morning.
The Camels fall to 4-2 on the year, while VCU extends its mark to
5-0.
Junior outside hitter Emily Werner tagged nine
kills to lead Campbell, adding five digs. Rookie outside hitter Jordan
Reaves nabbed six scores to go along with two blocks and one
ace, with junior middle blocker Caitlin Bendy posting four
kills on nine errorless attempts.
Leading the Rams were freshman outside hitter Michala Kvapilova and
senior middle Ivana Rich, who knocked down 13 and 11 kills,
respectively. Kvapilova's 15.5 points were a game-high, adding
eight digs, two aces and a block. Rich, meanwhile, added a pair of
block assists. Juniors Mariel Frey and Lenka Melicharkova combined
to give the Rams another 14 kills and 21 digs, with Melicharkova
adding 38 assists and two aces.
In the opening frame, the Rams jumped on top 5-1 after a pair of
Lenka Melicharkova services aces, two CU errors and a Michala
Kvapilova kill. Despite bringing the score to 14-12 on a VCU attack
error, the Camels never came closer to the lead, falling 25-18.
Kvapilova notched five kills in the frame, while Frey added four.
Werner also tallied four kills in the set for the Camels.
The Camels would grab their first lead of the match on the first
point of the second set, as a VCU attack error gave CU the
advantage. Knotted at seven-all, a Bendy ace again pushed Campbell
ahead. The Camels held the lead at 20-17, until five straight Ram
points gave VCU a 22-20 edge. The Camels would add a pair of kills
from Werner, but VCU held on for the 25-22 win. VCU's Kvapilova,
Rich and freshman outside hitter Kristin Boyd all recorded four
kills in the set.
The Rams owned the third and final stanza, dropping Campbell 25-19
to take the match. Tied at five-all, VCU quickly stretched the game
to a 19-11 score in its favor, keeping the Camels at a distance
despite an 8-6 CU edge. Boyd again struck the Camels in the frame,
totaling five kills to close out the match, while Kvapilova and
Rich added four each. Reaves also posted four scores for
Campbell.
The Camels are slated to take the court once more this afternoon,
taking on North Carolina Central at 4:30 p.m. VCU, meanwhile, will
face Virginia at 7 p.m.
