BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Meggie Graham and Taylor Dunlap scored to lead
Appalachian State to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Campbell
Saturday at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Mountaineers (3-1) won their third-straight game despite being
out-shot by a 12-5 margin. Twice in the opening period,
Appalachian cleared Camel shots off the goal line.
Olga Ekblom scored her second goal of the year in the 54th minute
to draw the Camels (2-2) level, but Appalachian went back in front
less than three minutes later. Dunlap controlled a clearance and
struck a ball from outside the box that found the net.
The Mountaineers nearly added to the lead two minutes later when
Graham's flicked on header sailed just over Jamie Panfil's cross
bar.
Campbell's best chance to equalize came in the 87th minute when
Annabelle Gibney laid the ball off to Tove Nordlander in the box,
but the Swede's left footed effort missed just wide of the left
post.
Appalachian went in front in the seventh minute when Sydney Hill
played the ball into the box to Meggie Graham, who regained control
and shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
Campbell twice beat Appalachian keeper Caroline Clarke off corner
kicks, but the Mountaineer defense cleared Marisa Muller's header
in the 11th minute and Tove Nordlander's shot in the 26th to
preserve the lead.
Clarke made a diving save in the 20th minute on Hanna Salmen's shot
from outside the box.
Clarke finished with four saves in the Appalachian nets, while
Panfil had one stop for the Camels.
Campbell returns to action Monday in a 7:00 p.m. start at
Gardner-Webb.
