STATESBORO, GA. - Pat Danford scored the game's lone goal in the
15th minute and Campbell defeated Georgia Southern 1-0 Tuesday in
men's soccer action at Eagle Field.
The Camels (1-2) claimed their first victory of the year, while
shutting out the Eagles for the second season in a row. Playing in
temperatures that reached into the mid-90s, the Camels went in
front when Danford nodded home a corner kick from Mitchell
Cardenas.
Vince Petrasso touched the corner to Cardenas, whose service found
Danford at the near post. Campbell had several additional chances
to add to the margin before half-time. Vince Petrasso broke free
twice, but missed once on a volley, then was thwarted by Eagle
keeper Joey Ralph, who rushed off his line for the save.
Keegan Terry had a chance to double the lead late in the half when
Ralph saved his drive from outside the box. The freshman forward
toe-poked the rebound past the keeper, but a GSU (0-3) defender
managed to clear the ball before it crossed the line.
Campbell finished with a 14-10 edge in shots. Camel keeper Ted
Awana made four saves while recording his first career shutout.
Danford nearly scored again with a second-half header off a corner
kick, but Ralph made a reaction save that was again cleared out of
danger at the post.
The Camels had a final chance to double their lead with 3:00
remaining in the contest, but Ralph saved Jason Keever's penalty
kick.
"It was a tough game. We had to pick and choose our spots to play
because the heat was definitely a factor," said Campbell head coach
Doug Hess. "I thought we did enough to win and it was great for us
to score on a corner and give our guys a boost of confidence. I
was certainly pleased to keep a clean sheet after we conceded six
goals in our first two games. Our team needed that as well, to
know that we can defend for 90 minutes."
Campbell travels to Charlotte Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off
against the 49ers.
