BUIES
CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell University women's tennis team will open
the spring campaign on Friday as they take part in the VCU Indoor
Invitational.
The Lady Camels will get the event underway at 12 noon as they take
on the host VCU at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Rams are
currently ranked #43 in the ITA team rankings and the team is fresh
off their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Campbell returns six players from a team that finished with a 14-10
overall record and advanced to the Atlantic Sun semifinals just a
year ago, including A-Sun All-Freshman team member Borislava
Nikolova and two-time All-Atlantic Sun member Blanca
Saenz.
The Lady Camels have also added three fresh faces to the roster
with Long Beach State transfer Lisa
Sutton and freshman Lourdes
Ros. Coach David Johnson, who now enters
his 12th season at the helm of the tennis team, also
just recently added freshman Nikoletta Kaposzta, from Vac, Hungary
to the squad. Campbell has been picked to finish seventh in the
preseason Atlantic Sun coach's poll.
Campbell participated in the event last season as well going 1-1.
The Lady Camels were knocked off by VCU in the morning before
defeating George Mason in the afternoon.
The event will be played by using a 4+1 format in order to speed up
play. The 4+1 signifies that each match will feature four singles
matches and one doubles match. The team that wins the best of five
will win the match.
After the bout with VCU, Campbell will take on George Mason at 5
p.m. for another rematch of last season's event.
Following the VCU event Campbell will return home for their first
home contest of the spring as they welcome in Charleston Southern
on February 12. The match is set for 2 p.m.
