BURLINGTON, N.C. - Dominik Wallaart took home the "B-2" singles
championship this past weekend at the Elon Fall Invitational. This
is Wallaart's first tournament championship as a Camel.
Wallaart started her tournament with a first round victory over
Winston-Salem State's Dominique Lindsay (6-0, 6-1). In the
semi-finals, Wallaart defeated Jesse Boda of Liberty 6-2, 6-1 and
won the title by beating Kalyn Smialek of Elon 6-0, 6-2.
Lisa
Sutton and Borislava
Nikolova both took home victories in the "A" flight. Sutton
defeated Ellie Linsell of Appalachian State in the first round
(7-6, 6-1). Sutton exited the tournament in the quarter-finals
after being defeated by Petra Vogel of East Carolina (6-2, 6-0).
Nikolova won her first round matchup over Radford's Ivana Tomic
2-6, 6-3, 6-4 but fell in the quarter-finals to Jennifer Anasari of
ASU 6-2, 7-5.
In the "A-2" singles flight, freshman Heather
Robinson earned a first round victory over Blakely Bean of ASU
(7-5, 6-4). The Witton Gilbert, England native lost her
quarter-finals match to Briana Berne of ECU 7-5, 6-3. Anais Gomar
also competed for the Camels in the "A-2" bracket, but lost her
first round match against Jessica Thaggard of AS 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Lourdes
Ros was defeated by Kayla Carter of WSSU in the first round of
the "A-3" singles bracket (6-3, 6-3). Ros then picked up a victory
on Saturday over Mirma Matic of Radford in the consolation bracket
(3-6, 6-3, 10-6).
In doubles action, Nikolova teamed with Robinson to earn a first
round victory over Linsell and Thaggard of ASU (8-6). The team's
tournament ended in the semi-finals after being defeated by Jaime
and Kedzo of East Tennessee State (8-2).
Sutton and Wallaart teamed together in the "A-2" doubles bracket.
The duo was defeated by Holtzhausen and Sheets of ETSU in the first
round (8-5). The team bounced back in the consolation bracket by
defeating Shulman and Law of Longwood (8-1) on Saturday and Khoury
and Jansaker of Elon on Sunday (8-6).
In the "B" doubles flight, Gomar and Ros lost their first round
matchup against Navrotska of ETSU and Smialek of Elon (8-2). In the
consolation bracket, the duo defeated Carter and Jarvis of WSSU 8-3
on Saturday and ASU's Prior and Cloer 8-6 on Sunday.
Campbell returns to action Thursday, Oct. 21, when they travel to
Chapel Hill, N.C. for the ITA Regionals.
