NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Annabelle
Gibney scored a pair of goals and Ryann
Torrero recorded her second-straight shutout to lift the
Campbell women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Lipscomb
Saturday at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
Campbell (6-7-1, 3-3-0 A-Sun) won its second straight match after
nipping Belmont 1-0 Thursday. Lipscomb dropped its fifth-straight
contest and falls to 4-9 overall and 0-5 in league play.
"There's no question that this was one of the best games we've
played this season," said head coach Todd
Clark. "We possessed the ball and created as many chances as
we have at any point this year. We had great buildups and our
midfield really played exceptional, and the fact that we were able
to get six points this weekend on the road is huge."
Gibney gave Campbell an early lead in the 12th minute
when Olga
Ekblom put her through into the box, and the Melbourne,
Australia, native chipped her first touch over Lipscomb keeper Erin
Zerio to put CU up 1-0.
"That was the nicest goal we've scored all year," said Clark.
CU
outshot the Lady Bisons 8-1 in the first half but was unable to
double its advantage until Gibney completed her double in the
60thminute.
Ekblom collected a long ball in the corner which drew Zerio from
the net, and she dropped it back to Marisa
Muller, whose cross found a wide-open Gibney in the box where
her shot found the empty net.
The Camels held an 11-7 advantage in shots over the Lady Bisons and
put five attempts on target compared with Lipscomb's four. Torrero
made four saves in the Campbell goal and has now recorded shutouts
in two of her first three career starts.
Campbell played all 19 available field players in the match.
"It's exciting for a coach to play every player he's brought on the
trip," said Clark. "Those kids have worked very hard and deserve
to get the chance to play."
With the win, Campbell extended its all-time unbeaten streak
against the Lady Bisons to 8-0-1 in nine matches.
The Camels return to Buies Creek next week for pivotal home games
against Kennesaw State (Thursday) and Mercer (Saturday). Kennesaw
State, the defending Atlantic Sun tournament champion, was picked
to win the league in the 2010 preseason coaches' poll. The Owls
dealt Campbell a 2-0 defeat last season.
Thursday's match is slated for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
"Every game is a must-win game now," said Clark. "We're going to
enjoy this win tonight and we'll get back after it and prepare for
a huge weekend against Kennesaw State and Mercer."
