Q. You
want to coach football after you graduate from Campbell, why do you
want to go into coaching?
I want to go into coaching because I want to have an effect on
kids' lives. The biggest effect that anybody had on my life,
besides my parents, was my coaches. Coach Steele and coach Link
have given me coaching advice from time to time, and they have
given me great advice on how to prepare practices around weather
conditions and the X's and O's of football.
Q. You
are close to your former high school coach, Tony George, how has he
helped you here at Campbell?
Well he came and spoke to the team before the game against Davidson
last year, which meant a lot to me. He has been a huge influence on
me, and we talk whenever we have a chance. I also enjoy working out
with him at his training facility when I am back at home.
Q. Who
has been the biggest influence on your football
career?
I would have to say my dad; he's set a great example for my family
and has been there for every step of my football career. I really
look up to him and respect him.
Q. Every
football team faces adversity and hard times, what motivates you to
keep working hard through tough times?
When our team experiences adversity and hard times our faith is the
main thing that keeps us going. We are a determined group of guys
that will never give up.
Q. What
is your normal pre-game routine?
I like to listen to a little bit of music and get fired up with the
rest of my teammates.
Q. What
is the best part about playing on special teams?
The best part is the opportunity to contribute to the team by
helping one of my teammates return a kick or set our offense up in
great field position.
Q. What
is your favorite off field activity?
Hanging out with friends; I enjoy watching TV or going out and
doing other things off campus.
Q. You
live with quarterback Daniel Polk, how has that relationship helped
you on the football field?
It's fun to scrimmage against each other and I have helped him with
his music choice by introducing him to some manlier music like
Gucci Mane and Eminem. (Laughs)
Q. Your
sister lives in Los Angeles CA, what is her job there?
She went to school out there to be an actress, and now she works at
a production company that produces commercials for various
companies. I enjoy going out there to visit her.
Q. You
have worked at numerous football camps during your summers, what is
the main thing that you try to teach kids that want to play college
football someday?
If you're not having fun, then don't do it. Football is a
commitment that you have to take seriously, and it's a small thing
that will teach you about the rest of your life.
Q. In
your opinion, what is the biggest difference between college and
high school football?
I would say that the speed and complexity of the game is the
biggest difference between the two levels of football.
Q. What
other player have you patterned your game after?
I would say Clay Matthews or Zach Thomas. There both great players
and I like how they approach and respect the game.
Q. As one
of the veterans on this team, what advice have you given any of the
younger players on the team?
To make sure that they fully invest themselves in the game because
they may not see it now, but all their hard work will pay off in
the end.
Q. What
has been your favorite memory as a Camel?
A bunch of my friends from out of town came down for the game
against Morehead State last season and we won, so that game really
sticks out in my mind.
Q. What
is the funniest thing that one of your coaches or teammates has
said to you out on the field?
Brandon Burt really says some funny things on the field and he
always makes me laugh. I also enjoy messing with Polk on the field
and making him mad sometimes.
Q. The
team message for this season is "climb the mountain." How does this
phrase apply to you as an individual rather than the team as a
whole?
I just always try to be encouraging and supportive of all my
teammates and be a team leader on and off the field. I'm also the
president of FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and I always
try to help people through that organization.
Q. Last year you made the PFL Academic Honor Roll,
what is your secret to making good grades and still having
time to play football?
It's all about time management and sometimes making the hard
sacrifices of doing schoolwork instead of hanging out with friends
or even sleeping.
Q.
Finally, what do you want to accomplish before the season is
over?
I want our team to win out. We have talent and the determination,
and I know that we are capable of doing it.
