CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sophomore Nick Rex won five matches in the 165
pound weight class and earned individual champion honors while
wrestling unattached in the Nov. 6 Citadel Open.
Rex, a native of Lakeland, Fla., won a 4-0 decision over South
Carolina's Mike Ahearn in the final to earn the individual
crown.
"I'm extremely proud of the effort Nick's put in, and this is a
tremendous honor for him," said first-year head coach Joe
Boardwine. "He's very driven and motivated, and he knows what he
wants to achieve. To see him put in all the hard work and win an
individual championship is a great achievement for him and honor
for our program."
Rex began the day with an 18-2 technical fall victory over Central
Florida's Howard Barr to advance to the second round, where he
pinned Appalachian State's Dominick Vetell.
Rex advanced to the semifinals after a medical forfeit in the third
round, and he bested the Citadel's Kenneth Radford 7-3 to reach the
final against Ahearn.
Wrestlers from 24 different schools competed in the day-long
tournament, while several wrestled unattached.
The Campbell wrestling team returns to the mat Nov. 20 when it
travels to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Classic, which is slated
for a 9 a.m. start.
