CREEK, N.C. - After earning MVP honors at the Global Sports Hoops
Showcase, Lorne Merthie of Campbell University has been named
Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball player of the week
The Fighting Camels (2-3) won a pair of games at the event,
including a 61-54 triumph over host Auburn, marking the program's
first victory over a Southeastern Conference school since a 73-72
overtime decision Jan. 12, 1994 at South Carolina.
Merthie scored 17 points with six rebounds, three assists and no
turnovers in Friday's 97-90 win over Middle Tennessee in the
opening round. He then had eight points and a season-high four
steals in the win over Auburn when the Camels scored 25 points off
24 Tiger turnovers. Merthie added a season-high 22 points (4-4
threes) with four steals in Sunday's 60-56 loss to Samford.
For the week, the pre-season A-Sun all-conference guard averaged
15.7 points and 2.7 steals over three games. He shot 53 percent
from the floor (16-30) and 62.5 percent (10-16) from three-point
range.
On the year, the Sanford, Fla., native is averaging 11.4 points and
1.6 steals per contest, while connecting on 48 percent of his shots
(19-40), 57 percent from 3-point distance (13-23).
He ranks as the most accurate 3-point shooter among all active
A-Sun players who have attempted at least 100 treys. Merthie has
connected on 134-of-321 triples (.417) in his three-year career.
Jordan Burgason of Lipscomb has made 41.2 percent (135-328) from
long distance.
The 2008 Winter Springs graduate is also the first Camel other than
4-time all-conference performer Jonathan Rodriguez to gain A-Sun
weekly honors since Dec. 2006.
Merthie and the Camels return to action with a pair of home
contests - a 1:00 p.m. tip-off Saturday vs. Longwood and a 7:00
p.m. tip-off on Monday (Nov. 29) vs. Johnson C. Smith.
