BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell head baseball coach Greg
Goff announced the additions of Jordan Farthing (Midway, NC),
Curtis Linthicum (Sophia, NC), Heath Bowers (Lillington, NC) and
Jake Kirkland (Pauline, SC), who all recently signed Nation Letters
of Intent and will attend Campbell University in the fall of
2011.
"I'm very pleased with this recruiting class, as we addressed our
immediate needs for the 2012 season," said Goff. "With only losing
four seniors, this class is small but very talented. All four of
these young men will fit perfectly into our baseball program here
at Campbell, and will continue the top-rated classes that our staff
has been able to bring to Buies Creek over the last three
years."
"If you look at the ceiling that each one of these guys has, this
could pan out to be one of the most successful classes in school
history," said assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Justin
Haire. "Each of these young men is talented enough and will be
expected to come in and contribute in a big way next year, but what
is really exciting is the potential that this class has over the
course of their career."
Jordan Farthing, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher, will make a short
trip to Buies Creek from Midway High School in Spivey's Corner,
N.C. As a junior, Farthing posted a 5-1 record with a 2.00 ERA
while striking out 54 in just 28 innings.
Farthing was named 2009-10 All-County Conference First Team, CCSSL
All-Star Team, an Academic All-Star and is member of the Beta Club,
all while ranking in the top 15 percent of his graduating class.
Farthing was also named a 2010 Rawlings All-American Underclassmen
Honorable Mention and PGcrosschecker.com has him ranked as the No.
22 rated player in the state of North Carolina, No. 466 in the
nation and the No. 161 rated right-handed pitcher in the
country.
"Jordan is a tall, strong-armed right-handed pitcher that is just
starting to scratch the surface of how good he can be," said
pitching coach Rick
McCarty. "I am looking forward to getting him to campus and
working with him to help him reach the high standards that he has
set for himself."
Curtis Linthicum, a 5-foot-10 left-handed pitcher, will come to
Campbell from Randleman High School as one of the most decorated
players in RHS history. As a junior, Linthicum was named the PAC 6
Conference Player of the Year, NCHSAA All-State First Team and the
starting pitcher of the Region 5 NC State games team. The southpaw
posted an 8-0 record on the mound with a 1.56 ERA with 81
strikeouts in 45 innings pitched. He also hit .405 with 28 RBI and
four home runs. Linthicum is also a Beta Club member, and has
earned the RHS Citizenship Award for his involvement with the
surrounding community.
"Curtis is a high-energy, competitive, bulldog-type pitcher on the
mound," said Haire. "He is going to have a chance to come in and
compete as a freshman because not only does he have the talent to
compete at this level, but has the competitive spirit that we are
looking for in our players."
Heath Bowers, a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher, comes to Buies Creek
from right up the road in Lillington, N.C. and Harnett Central High
School.
Bowers enjoyed a successful junior year both on the mound and at
the plate for the Trojans, registering a 6-3 record with a 2.19 ERA
and 68 strikeouts in 47 innings of work. He also hit .607 with four
home runs and 23 runs batted in. Bowers was named to the 2010
Greater Neuse River All-Conference First team, while garnering HCHS
Offensive Player of the Year honors. Bowers was also selected to be
a 2010 Central Carolina Scholastic League All-Star.
"Heath is another arm that has a huge upside and that we can't wait
to get into our program," said McCarty. "He has gotten bigger and
stronger over the last year, and has really started to figure out
his body, and has a chance to be an impact arm for us before it is
all said and done."
Jake Kirkland, a 6-foot-1 first baseman and outfielder, will
transfer to Campbell from USC Sumter, a junior college in Sumter,
SC. As a freshman, Kirkland helped Coach Tom Fleenor's Fire Ant
squad to a 37-23 record, and was a mainstay in the middle of their
order. Kirkland hit .304 on the year with 11 doubles, three
triples, 15 home runs and 51 RBI.
Kirkland's freshman year numbers set the single season program
record for Sumter in home runs, while tying the RBI mark and
posting the fifth most doubles in a single season. The
single-season home run record was previously held by current
Fighting Camel Alan
Denman.
"Jake is a young man that has tremendous power potential, and is
becoming more and more of a complete hitter at USC Sumter," said
Haire. "He will have a chance to come into an explosive offense and
make his mark, just as he has for Coach Fleenor. And with his
strength and athleticism, he should have a chance to set some
records, and help us move towards winning a championship."
"I'm very excited about seeing these guys arrive on campus next
fall," said Goff. "All of these young men fit the mold of player
that we are trying to bring to Campbell, and build this program
around. I expect for them to come in and give us a chance to
compete for a championship as soon as they don the Black and Orange
next year."
